Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior III: you mean they made a sequel to that one game with all the instant death monsters?

The Golden Claw change in the remake versions is pretty interesting. The encounter rate spike is even higher (it might just be guaranteed?) but it only functions in the Pyramid. Even with having the bag to store a full compliment of herbs over just your party members' inventory slots it's a pretty b...

TA wrote:All women, girl team is underrepresented in this series and just more fun, and if you get lucky with rare drops actually to your advantage. And the sprites all look better.

Also, the Sexy personality in the remakes is the best for all-around balanced stat growth.

The most feature-full version is somehow the GBC one. I like the Super Famicom one best, I think, but the mobile version is probably the closest to the original NES but prettier. The Pachisi rewards in SFAM/GBC can really unbalance parts of the game.

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior III: you mean they made a sequel to that one game with all the instant death monsters?

Since Thief is only available in the SNES/GBC versions, I'll go Fighter, Pilgrim, Wizard. I'm very tempted to echo TA and swap the Wizard for Merchant since the extra money is nice and eventually they're both Sages anyway, but since whips and boomerangs are also SNES/GBC-only, it's really nice to ha...

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior II: Warrior Hardier!

4 will probably always be my favorite DQ, but I also haven't played through without the PSX/3DS upgrade of being able to manually control party members in Chapter 5 for a long time. I think it would be an amazing game even at the end of the SNES/early PSX era, but much like the first 3 DQs, it's pus...

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior II: Warrior Hardier!

Boss healing as attrition is a great pairing to dungeons as resource management, but there's a reason later series entries went with a flat Meditate heal amount over HealAll (which FF ended up duplicating with Chaos' Cur4). Having recently replayed 7, 8, and 3 I think I might do 9 next but I'm reall...

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior II: Warrior Hardier!

Huh, I didn't realize the mech enemies were around way back in II. Definitely have the foggiest memories of this one, but it's really impressive just how many staples got crammed in so early.

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior II: Warrior Hardier!

Not to derail too hard, here (sorry), but this has inspired me to run through DQ3 again. I went for the SFC translated version to compare to my old/your upcoming NES experience but... I've already found a MAJOR problem and might have to restart on NES:

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior II: Warrior Hardier!

I meant to mention it in the 1 playthrough, but I really like the world map fog-of-war you put up after new locations. I'd imagine it's even neater for people who haven't played the game.

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior!

Dragon Warrior is not a perfect game by any means, but its ideas and the execution of these ideas set the foundation for an entire genre, its myriad successors either iterating and building on its systems and adding notions of their own, or sometimes merely being cargo-cult imitators with only the ...

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior!

They should really have put an NPC somewhere with the information about Erdrick's Armor's swamp resistance instead of expecting you to notice as you leave Hauksness so the player knows there's a way to not hate getting the Token. Kind of a weird oversight in a game that otherwise is really good abou...

Re: Let's play Dragon Warrior!

Playing Torches and Radiant against each other in a resource management dungeon crawl is pretty great, especially the feeling when they start to wear out and the illumination constricts. I've always preferred DQ's attrition to FF and most others' full resources to fight the boss choice though abando...

Re: Randomization

It'd be kind of nice to have a local version of the randomizer, too. I tried it one more time this morning and had a supremely boring one (Cecil, Kain, Edge, Rosa, Fusoya. Crystal and Dark Crystal by I think 36m, with Adamant Armor available in a shop and an early Crystal Sword, so a dupe and some G...
