Re: Fucking Cell Phones

Can't get the flashlight app to work either, which reinforces my guess that app permissions (access to filesystem, camera, etc.) are set in some non-obvious location. Tight default security is a good thing. But Android's got the right idea with asking for permissions at install or first run time. Al...

Re: Oh shit, what are we gonna do now?

Nah, it's more that there's a lot of piling on from the usual sources and a lot of people are saying "Hey... I like McDonalds/eat McDonalds all the time." which creates a dumb (but real) sense of sympathy. It plays to the crowd he wants it to play with and gets the "elitists" wh...

Re: Game musings and news

Okay, I've got a question. What's a game that's relaxing and can be played in short bursts? Say I've only got half an hour, so maybe not enough time to complete a day in Stardew Valley or really dig into Dragon Quest Builders. Something like Civ where you think you're going to take a couple quick tu...

Re: It's getting a little STEAMy in here.

BTW, if you want to check Linux/Proton compatibility, protondb.com is the place to do it. It's crowdsourced, YMMV based on your distro and configuration, and the people submitting the ratings don't always respect the guidelines for them ("Platinum - minor graphical glitches" is not a thing...

There's some other good stuff in the Humble sale, too. Disney Afternoon Collection is currently $8; I think I might snag that. Mega Man 11 is $24 and recently Denuvo-free.

Re: Game musings and news

I need a game that I can get up and walk away from at a moment's notice without losing track of what was going on. Cities Skylines is really good for that! Factorio is pretty good for that! Skyrim is probably not great for that. I am the filthiest of casuals in that I really don't have time to deve...

Re: TV Series On The Television

I'm still working through X-Files and have been surprised to discover that season 6 is actually good. I'm 11 episodes in and almost all of them have been good-to-great. There was one mediocre one (Skinner's mystery illness), and only one that I'd say was actually bad (devil babies), but that one had...

Re: In the Land of Wonderful Dreams

I was getting ready to board a plane, and I was taking my dog. I needed to fit her into my carry-on, and so I separated her into pieces. Her head detached from her body, which itself separated into two pieces. It was a twist-and-pull kind of interlocking thing. I put all three pieces into a duffel b...

...welp, my dumb ass bought a GSM phone even though I'm on a CDMA network. Anyway, I got my Nexus 5 fixed. Power button, like I thought. Found a place that's open on Sundays and did it for $45. (The guy did say "I quoted you $55 on the phone, right?" and I'm not entirely sure if that was a...

If it's in your Steam library, it'll show up under Linux, no matter whether you got it directly from Steam or got a Steam code from another site (Humble or Fanatical or wherever). By default, only games that are officially supported by Valve show up as Linux-compatible, but there's a setting you can...

Re: Let's all go to the movies~

I have just returned from an M Night Shyamalanathon featuring Unbreakable, Split, and Glass. It was an exercise in diminishing returns. I like Unbreakable more every time I see it. It is a great damn movie. I can come up with a few quibbles -- Shyamalan's cameo seems pointless, and the comic book ar...

Re: Game musings and news

I've mentioned before that, as great as it is that Steam now provides one-click Linux support for Windows games, you don't get that support if you bought your game somewhere else -- and that, specifically, this has been a barrier for my trying to pick my GOG version of The Witcher 3. Well, I finally...

Re: Hot game deals

There's a rather good Square Enix sale on at Humble right now. A lot of the SE sales are Eidos-centric, but this one's got your Final Fantasies and Dragon Quests and such too.

Unfortunately pretty heavy on Denuvo.

Also, they've got A Story About My Uncle free.

Re: Oh shit, what are we gonna do now?

Plenty of grifters are successful. Carnival barkers, used car salesmen, people running pyramid schemes. Trump's only real talent is taking advantage of a mark -- but that is a talent, of a sort. There's no way he'd be rich if his daddy hadn't been. But he'd have found some somewhat-successful grift ...

Re: A take so hot I think I got singed reading it.

I'm pretty tired of hearing "but the joooobs" suggested as a valid excuse for continuing practices that are actively hurting people / planet / everything. The problem is that in a supposedly wealthy nation most people are one hardship away from hunger and homelessness. The job is a red he...

I just saw Janet(s) and man, I don't care about awards but D'Arcy Carden deserves some for playing all four principals. She did some damn fine work on that one.
