Re: Obituaries

Mark Bright , an artist who worked on a whole lot of comics back in the '80s and '90s, including Power Man and Iron Fist, and co-created Icon (with Dwayne McDuffie) and Quantum and Woody (with Christopher Priest). He hadn't done a lot of comics work in the past couple of decades, but Q&W remain...

Meanwhile, Nintendo finally shut down online services for the Wii U and 3DS today, so you may want to check out Pretendo.

Re: General Old Game Hardware Thread

Super Mario 64 Land locks it up too. Real ROMs (and minor ROMhacks like the D-pad controls for Yoshi's Story) seem to be working okay. I haven't played a real N64 in a very long time so I probably wouldn't notice minor differences, but Mario Kart seemed fine. I noticed one moment where the attract m...

Re: General Old Game Hardware Thread

The N64 core's made it into mainline MiSTer. I haven't messed with it much yet but it seemed to work on a few different games I threw at it. The Super Mario 64 Last Impact romhack locked it up but I'm not sure if that one runs on real hardware either. AIUI there's some show-stopping bug that's preve...

The Comics Journal: “I've Rediscovered A Mode Of Expression That Was Important To Me As A Kid”: A Talk with Jordan Mechner Replay came out a few weeks ago. It's a graphic memoir that Mechner wrote, drew, colored, and lettered himself, and it traces the lives of his grandfather Adolph, his father Fra...

Re: Arizona is a blasted hellscape

Abortion in Arizona set to be illegal in nearly all circumstances, state high court rules This isn't surprising but it's pretty fucking dispiriting. The good news is that I don't think it'll last the year; I believe this all but guarantees that the abortion access amendment will make it onto the No...

Yeah, I picked white supremacy as an obvious example but any supremacy will do, any desire to dominate some other group as lesser.

Re: X-Men

Apparently they're changing Wolverine's creator credit to include editor Roy Thomas, and what do you know, this is the first time I've ever heard of someone being added to a creator credit and not been happy about it. WTF, Roy? I guess for a guy who made a career of following in Stan Lee's footsteps...

Re: GOP Will Shit Itself

Even as my opinion of evangelical Christians is at an all-time low (and it wasn't high to begin with), I'm less inclined than ever to think that religion is really the problem. Over on the other side of the Atlantic you've got intellectual atheists pushing much the same kind of bigotry that anti-int...

Re: SNES Favorite 75

I don't know if Star Fox is actually the most technically impressive game, spec wise, on the SNES. I don't care. It feels like a fucking N64 game. Well, a N64 game with framerate issues. Yeah, I thought about it and I agree; Star Fox isn't the highest-spec game on the SNES but it's the one that fel...

Re: Things That Go in Your Mouth

Gin is another one of those spirits that didn't do much for me back in college but that I decided to take another crack at (largely based on Parish's recommendations), reasonably figuring that maybe the people I was drinking with back then were just buying the cheap shit. It turns out I do in fact l...

Beer is still my go-to alcoholic beverage but I've been picking up the occasional bottle of liquor. So maybe I'll write about that sometimes. If nothing else, so I've got something to come back to and go "Oh yeah, that was what that thing was called." Pueblo Amigo Reposado Tequila Suave I ...

Man's Best, by Pornsak Pichetshote and Jesse Lonergan, is Homeward Bound in Space and it's off to a solid start. -- Batman: Dark Age is Mark Russell and Mike Allred's followup to Superman: Space Age, another alternate-universe story that begins around 1960. I liked most of it, though I didn't care f...

AIUI they got rid of the comments -- like, not just disabled new comments but took down the entire history -- and that lasted about two hours before the backlash led them to reverse course.

At least, that's what I hear. I haven't actually gone back there.
