Where does he get those wonderful toys?

Postby Mongrel » Sun Oct 03, 2021 12:22 pm

Not a big toy guy myself anymore, outside of wargaming stuff (which has its own thread, since it's as a much arts and crafts as it is a toy), but some of you are, I think? Anyway, we didn't actually have a toy thread, so here I guess

Lego Typewriter! Pretty mechanically impressive; it's almost functional!

The dissolution of Disney Infinity is one of my true toy sorrows; the figurines for the game are just nerd hummels with no articulation or anything, but the design choice to make everything "fit" together in a blocky animated style really came together when they started adding Marvel and Star Wars stuff to make for a cohesive display despite the insane variation in characters created. I keep thinking I ought to go dig and complete the collection of figures since I've got something like 70% of them already.

I love articulated action figures too, but I'm pretty picky about which ones I pick up these days; most recently I grabbed an Udon-style Taskmaster Marvel Legends from several years back because they were getting kinda hard to track down for a reasonable price and superseded in searches by the more recent Black Widow version. Marvel Legends always has been and continues to be real solid from a posing/play/display perspective and the sheer variety on offer as well as being pretty cohesive design wise despite pulling from comic, animated, and live action looks. I do envy the really nice figuarts and similar Japanese figures coming out these days too but they're generally too rich for my blood for something that's just gonna sit on my computer monitor shelf. I'm generally trying to pick up things these days that I have some formative/nostalgic fondness for -- the Agent X/Taskmaster Marvel series are what got me back into comics at all years ago, for example. And I snatched up a Glomgold figure from DuckTales 2017 because Glomgold is the golddarned best.

That being said, I've been real fucking tempted to pull the trigger on this fucker for a while. Evangelion and Godzilla are evergreen warm-and-fuzzies for me.

I'm not sure what it says that when I saw you posting ITT, my first thought was "Oh, Friday posted in the toy thread. Vibrator joke probs?"

Oh hey, we have a toy thread? Maybe I can spam my Nerf junk... here... instead of...

Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt the grown-up toy talk, I'll check back later.

I love my dart blasting arsenal. My parent friends love it when I bring them over or to one of the kid's birthday parties (I've got some 30-odd blasters and a couple thousand darts). I pretty much exclusively collect standard elite caliber blasters though, since that makes it easy to manage my dart collection and supply everyone with ammo.

My current primary is an Adventure-Zone/Dart-Force Villianator. I was going to swap out for their new Tomahawk-60 but it kept jamming on me.

I never had a collection myself, but I had a friend who did when we were kids and a lot of fun times in his backyard doing Nerf Wars with the boys at birthdays and such.

Yeah there's a friend of mine in Ohio that's a huge Nerf nerd, including modding/refurbishing and all that. It's neat stuff.

Is there any modern equivalent to the old sniper longbow?

Depends on what you mean. If you straight up want one of those old "Big Bad Bows" modded to fire elites, not so much I don't think.

But if you want accurate, long range dart blasters then the guys who aren't nerf have gotten into sport-grade blasters. The Nexus blasters from Wal-Mart and Dart-Zone's Pro line at Target can be had at reasonable prices and I've heard good things about their performance. I personally don't own one because I primarily play with kids so don't feel the need for competitive gear.

Like the old '91 Bow 'n' Arrow? Because I just happened to print some new arms for the one Romo entrusted me with.

There have also been several homemade bows from the late 00's and early 10's that did about the same thing, back when PVC was king and 3D printing was seldom seen outside of places like laboratories and schools.

There's actually quite a few new bows out now in a bunch of different sub-series. But if you want something irresponsibly powerful, I'd spring for a Big Bad Bow. A little more optimized, similar function, and shoots very similar arrows. Plus you can really go to town mod-wise. Just cutting out the safety valve and sticking in a cut-up Crayola marker will let you shoot regular darts at alarming speeds.
