Congratulations! You reinvented a dish from the 1500s.

His name is Hill, and he has a nextdoor neighbor named Dale!

I don't know how it took me twenty years to realize this, but...the main characters in Toy Story have got to be named after Woody Woodpecker and Buzz Buzzard, right?

I think they're a reference to classic dildos vs. futuristic vibrators.

I guess the old Woody Woodpecker cartoons could have had some influence on their naming, since we are dealing with a story written by animation nerds after all, but there are more immediately obvious references; Woody is pretty much just straight up Howdy Doody, and Buzz is named for Buzz Aldrin of course.

From what I've read, early versions of the script gave the character's name as "Woody Pride".

That's right.

They wanted to name their main character "Penis Envy".

Well, there's a not-inconsiderable Buck Rogers thing going on there too. But it can be more than one thing.

I always figured the Woody character was originally meant to be a wooden doll and Andy's happened to be a plastic reprint of it. Kind of underscoring the fact that Woody is old-fashioned but not really that old.

(Also I apparently he's really supposed to be a stuffed doll, but for obvious reasons he looks like plastic.

Also apparently he probably IS really old. I did not follow Toy Story canon very closely.)

...his name is Zero because he's patient zero.

It was staring us right in the face all along.

From a series that includes the phrase "So Double was a double-agent all along?" I don't think on-the-nose names are a stretch.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with being the counterpart to a robot named X.
