It's nice not having whatever gene runs in my family that makes them immediately want to get a new car whenever they pay off the last one.

Re: Small Pleasures
The only reason I don't is because there aren't a lot of cars that I like more than the one I already have.
Re: Small Pleasures
Yeah, I don't get that.
I mean, my wife bought a new car right after she paid off the last one, but that wasn't because she wanted to, it was because the transmission was going south and she was looking at paying a shitload of money either way.
I'm still on my first car (one of many reasons security questions are terrible); I've had it for just over 8 years and have been surprised as hell it's lasted this long and has never had any major issues -- I mean, I had a tire tread come off a few months ago, and just had to replace my brakes, but that's wear and tear stuff; I've never had a serious issue. All the more impressive given that the car was totaled before I got it. (We have a family friend who does body work -- and body damage was the only thing wrong with it -- who bought it, fixed it up, and offered me a good deal on it.)

I wasn't too entirely surprised when the '77 Chevelle Malibu I first drove lasted 25 years. What did surprise me is that the '92 Mercury Tracer my brother and I inherited from my grandfather lasted 21, despite spending a few seasons unsheltered, unused and unmaintained in a driveway before we got it and how my brother essentially stopped all upkeep for the final four years. And even then, the only reason he got rid of it was because the local police didn't take kindly to him not bothering to fix a deep dent in the passenger side door (an idiot rammed him in a parking lot) and forced him to take it off the road. If it wasn't for that it'd probably still be ticking.

I just quickly completed an obnoxious task at work by utilizing years of puzzle/adventure gaming skills.

It's not every day you have a fresh-baked pastry on hand to deal with a yeti problem.

Re: Small Pleasures
Went shopping with a friend and bought some goop that makes my hair smell like jasmine tea and a pretty unmentionable. The store with the hair goop was playing a song from Katamari.
Re: Small Pleasures
The best job I ever had was the summer before my last year of college. I worked at USGS in Flagstaff, on the astrogeology team.
More specifically, I worked (in a pretty limited capacity, you understand) on the software they used to process images coming back from outer space.
And I worked there right as Cassini went into orbit around Saturn.
Now, I was just an undergrad working a summer job. I didn't do anything amazing (I worked on makefiles to get the code to compile cleanly on multiple platforms), and I doubt very much that any of my code is still in the software a decade later.
But still, any time I'm skimming headlines and see "Cassini" in there, I stop what I'm doing and pull up the article. It makes me smile, to think that I was a small part of this.
And so, the latest from Cassini, via Ars: there are bright spots in the rings that may be a moon being created, or one being destroyed.

I feel like I need a portmanteau of Illuminati and tumblr or twitter.
