I believed, everyone believed, that he was one of the good guys, committed to fighting for women’s rights, committed to our marriage, and to the women he worked with. But I now see how he used his relationship with me as a shield, both during and after our marriage, so no one would question his relationships with other women or scrutinize his writing as anything other than feminist.

You know, had this been published a decade, or even half a decade, ago, I might have brushed it off as vindictive. But over the years, looking at Joss Whedon's body of work, both in detail and in aggregate, it's become abundantly clear that he's not a feminist. This is just another nail in the coffin.

Joss Whedon has been bugging me for a long, long time, because he makes such a show of claiming to be a feminist, and in a clever way, where he admits fault and weakness so as to make it all more believable. But he never quite pulled the lie off... I always had a sort of feeling that it was a doth-protest-too-much sort of thing.

His characters never felt quite right to me. They never felt like people, let alone women specifically. It was clear he had some awareness, but still couldn't get it right. My angry, encyclopedic friend Jack had long preached the same thing and has a long list of careful justifications, citing works, etc, but for me it was always just a gut thing. Hi characters felt phony somehow, in a subtle, but deep way. The few people I mentioned this to blew it off as reactionary nonsense or my chasing at shadows. A few others just didn't like Whedon at all, so they didn't care what was specifically bad about it.

In any case, I am not a woman, which made me reluctant to push too hard with any criticism of what I felt was wrong about another man's depiction of women (or people in general). My inability to really articulate what felt wrong about his work exactly didn't make me more confident about saying anything. So I left it at that and decided to keep my opinion to myself.

The extent of his ability to lie so profoundly - to others and himself - goes a long way towards explaining all this. His work almost passed muster because even though it seems he did not actually have true empathy, he was able to convince himself and others that he did, and so well that he ALMOST made it all believable.

It's nice to know that I'm not crazy after all.

Dollhouse in particular felt like a show trying to have it both ways, to depict the horrors of exploitation while simultaneously titillating the audience. It's a little bit like the racism in Tarantino films -- yeah, the racists are always the bad guys, but he seems to have a little too much fun writing their dialogue.

At any rate, sadly not the first vaunted feminist to get hit with allegations that he doesn't practice what he preaches, but probably the most prominent (in entertainment, at least). Pretty sure I posted about Brian Wood awhile back, but he's hardly the household name that Whedon is.

Always sucks to hear someone whose work you enjoy is a pretty lousy person. But hell, if Adam Baldwin's offscreen behavior hasn't ruined Firefly for me, I guess Joss Whedon's probably won't either.
