I think in this one instance a descriptive link would amount to explaining the joke.
Still no reason you can't just use the headline as the link text. Straight links are dumb. Here's how he could have done it:

Google UK hides a secret portal to the seventh transcendent internet dimension on a tiny island off the UK's north coast
Actually I have no idea what is going on here.

Not sure if this is super old or horribly inaccurate, but I spent too much time watching nations appear, grow, shrink, and separate over the years

I'm sure plenty of folks on these boards figure they must know a thing or two about Japan. Why, I can feel myself learning about Nippon every time I see those cartoon boobs jiggle.
Well, that may or may not be, but I thought this lengthy bit specifically on Japanese start-up culture was pretty neat. It also comes with a dollop of the more familiar Salaryman Experience as an appetizer, and a slice of information on immigration for dirty entrepreneurial westerners for dessert.
It's worth reading just for the stories of his bank manager. Oh man.

It's not surprising but still terrifying how identically Panasonic functions on this side of the pond.

Re: Links
I also loved this bit:
Example: Relationships. Should you want to get married in Japan, you’ll find that most young ladies, and virtually all young ladies’ parents, prefer the material stability that comes from salarymen. My wife Ruriko was able to overlook my damaged professional prospects, despite the prevailing opinion among her friends being that I was unemployed. (The hypothesis was advanced, more than once, that as a foreigner who routinely travels abroad, speaks Spanish, and has money without any evidence of gainful employment, I was probably a drug dealer. I wish I were joking.)
