Fun Facts
Yeah, this is a "What I Learned Today" reprise thread.
Anyway: Jack Kirby worked on Popeye cartoons at Fleischer Studios.

Re: Fun Facts
In the French translation of the Harry Potter books, Voldemort's middle name is Elvis.
Re: Fun Facts
Eeyup. Had to make the change for the whole "I AM LORD VOLDEMORT" thing to work. Tom Marvolo Riddle doesn't anagram into "JE SUIS VOLDEMORT", but Tom Elvis Jedusor does. They do something like this in all the translations - my favorite of the list is the Hungarian, where Tom Rowle Denem becomes "Nevem Voldemort", getting two Vs by splitting the W in half.
Re: Fun Facts
That's incredible. I'm glad I know that now.

Re: Fun Facts
After Sean Connery resigned as James Bond, Albert Broccoli offered the role to his first choice after Connery: Burt Reynolds (Burt's reason for turning it down was that "An American can't play James Bond. It just can't be done.").

Today I learned about Boron Nitride, which (among many other useful characteristics) is harder than diamond when synthesized correctly.

Each night, when you go to sleep, your skull hinges open, and your brain flies off and goes on adventures. This is what dreams are.

It's true, I saw it.
Re: Fun Facts
Did you know? Semi-reputable website fanfiction.net apparently added some script or another that makes it impossible to select text, and thus copy it to your clipboard. GEE I WONDER WHAT COULD HAVE POSSIBLY LED THEM TO DO THIS

Re: Fun Facts
yeah, i ran into that a few months ago and was all 'you got to be shitting me' but then its fanfics and really there's nothing important there ever so
Re: Fun Facts
Au contraire, my dear Cthulhu! This makes it harder than it should be to select delicious morsels of bad fiction and share them on your mock-blogs (or mock-threads, or mock-tumblrs, or whatever else the "kids" are using these days). Way, way too hard.
Re: Fun Facts
And of course mocking fanfiction IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD!
Serious question, though: would anybody here contribute to a bad fanfiction thread, if I were to make it?

Re: Fun Facts
If it's an actual script, I wonder if NoScript blocks it.
I just don't want to have to go to fanfic.net to actually find out. D:

Re: Fun Facts
All the page text should be right there in Page Source/View Source/whatever your browser calls it.
You might have to pare out the formatting HTML but just disabling highlights or right-clicks is always a half-assed measure for content protection.
(Caveat: I do not know what the whole-assed measure would be.)

There isn't one. If something has been copied to your computer's memory, it can be copied to your computer's persistent storage.
I mean, as with all forms of DRM, there are plenty of ways they could make it progressively stupider and more inconvenient -- like, they could make all the damn things images instead of text, something like that -- but that's really all copy protection is, is piling more layers of stupidity and inconvenience on top of something that is an inherent function of how computers work.

People will just switch to screenshots.

Re: Fun Facts
The no-copy is just on the main text. You can start highlighting from the header and it will select just fine, though it tends to select the entire thing instead of a section.
Like, even for a half-assed measure this is half-assed.

Buck and a quarter quarter-assed.
