Even though they're probably some of the worst about exploiting the things youtube cares about the most, The Game Grumps have been very good about verbalizing all the issues. How they willingly ignore things because negative comments come in much faster than positive ones. How even though most of the group are artists and animators by trade they have no real plans of doing those things regularly because it wont make them nearly as much money as a playing video games and making dumb jokes.

Use of "Ditto marks" similar to the same ones used today dates back almost 3000 years ago.

I can't actually think of another typographical mark offhand that goes back that far, across so many alphabets and languages.

The best part is that Sumerian and Chinese pictographic languages developed (probably pretty much) independently from each other, but still arrive at """* to indicate "same thing as before." Probably for entirely practical reasons. The only thing more simple than two short strokes of a pen or stylus would be a single stroke, but one could be an accident, and two in parallel is most likely deliberate.

Meanwhile, the closest thing to a universal word in spoken language may be "huh?" to indicate that one didn't understand what was said, and that it needs to be repeated or elaborated upon. Turns out pretty much everybody on the planet makes that sound or one very much like it in that context.

Watched Bubba Ho-Tep last night. When the credits rolled, I saw the name of the guy who wrote the original short story, Joe R Lansdale. And I thought, "Where have I seen that name before?"

Well, it turns out I'd seen it on the title cards of three of the best episodes of Batman: The Animated Series: Perchance to Dream (the one where Bruce Wayne wakes up in a world where his parents are still alive), Read My Lips (first appearance of the Ventriloquist), and Showdown (the one with Jonah Hex). (He also wrote Critters, but we won't hold that against him. Or against the late, great Steve Gerber, who came up with the story for it.)

And he also wrote Identity Crisis, the Superman: TAS episode that introduced Bizarro. And I couldn't help noticing some similarities between that and Bubba Ho-Tep: Bizarro thinks he's Superman, has to face his own weakness and mortality, and does something heroic at the end.

Lansdale's done a shitload of other stuff besides those things, but they're definitely where I recognized him from.
