Computerus
Re: Computerus
I don't think it even gets to the point where I can initiate a safe mode boot.

Re: Computerus
Oh hey how crazy! I was just about to complain about a process that (I hope) solved a similar issue. I'm still going to, only now I'll leave the solution separated on the bottom so Buge can jump to it.
In the past I had issues with random shut downs with no real explanation. It seemed like overheating but some days it took less to trip than others and I could never really track down the exact issue. Besides, taking one of the covers off always seemed to solve it short-term.
Jump to this weekend and after moving stuff for bedbug killing (an entirely different shit days post is brewing inside me about all that) it's doing it near instantly. Sometimes I get to the windows load screen, rarely the desktop, but usually it shuts down at some point before the windows load or at the start of attempted system repairs.
A series of searches later and I decide the issue is either A) the CPU came loose while moving things. or B) something I probably wouldn't figure out or be able to fix without sinking more into this system than I really want to right now. That made it easy to go with A. I take off the CPU fan and immediately see that the thermal paste has gone to shit. There's a single flake left that falls off when I rub it. after getting the new compound I of course fucked up the legs on the CPU fan and now it doesn't sit quite right, so now my comp is lying on the side. The computer stayed on for almost an hour last night but killswitched itself again. Just now however, I realize I missed a pin reconnecting the fan and things seem to be going well so far, until this jinxing kicks in.
TL;DR for Buge. Get some thermal paste from your local computer parts place and some rubbing alcohol. Clean off the CPU and fan and reapply. Also don't break anything while doing all this.

Re: Computerus
Technically, my computer still works... Here's the thing. The CMOS battery is dead, so when I do a complete shutdown, it resets the clock. The warning and subsequent setup can be initiated BEFORE Windows starts up, so I tried that and it seemed to work. My hypothesis at this point is that it needs to warm up a little before running.
But you might be on to something, BB. My machine's starting to shut down without warning while I'm doing stuff.

Re: Computerus
Your computer could be automatically switching off because it's overheating, too, in which case... do the opposite of that.
Re: Computerus
Except if it were an issue with overheating, why did it only show up now?
Re: Computerus
Heat Sink issues or fan problems. Possibly dust or other things (bugs, lint, etc) clogging air flow. Age. Hell there are tons of factors that could cause a computer to start over heating. Hell even jostling it around while you're trying to figure out what's wrong with it can cause issues with shit unseating itself, and having to disconnect every fucking thing in your computer and reconnected it because you have no idea which ONE connection is disconnected is 30 minutes of fun you'll never get back.
Re: Computerus
The best part is when Windows stops recognizing your registration because you disconnected too many things. Even if you've reconnected them since.
Re: Computerus
Things to buy:
New fan
CMOS Battery
Thermal Paste

Re: Computerus
You mean a new fan to sit on your existing heatsink?
Re: Computerus
I mean a new fan to cool the inside of my computer. Not sure if I need a new heat sink fan yet.
Re: Computerus
Hey Buge, what are your specs?
Re: Computerus
Specs for what component? I'm not sure what I'm doing.
I tried the thermal paste and it didn't solve anything. My CPU was running at about 40+ celsius and the motherboard wasn't far behind.

Re: Computerus
40C is well within normal range for a modern CPU.
Google your processor's model and the phrase "max temperature" and you should find something. Use openhardwaremonitor to see your model and current temp.

Re: Computerus
Got my new computer up and running again temporarily - but it keeps turning itself off, suddenly just stops. Already replaced the motherboard and when it's on, it runs like a charm so I doubt it's the CPU - My current thought is that it's the power supply having issues because tonight when it was acting up, I could see the power flickering on the obnoxious LEDs on the motherboard, anyone else have thoughts?
Re: Computerus
Looks like after replacing both the motherboard and the power supply, my computer is actually finally working right.

This was all new components - the PSU and Motherboard shitting the bed shouldn't have happened.
Re: Computerus
Does anyone have any experience with McAfee Antivirus Plus? The computer shop offered to install it on my PC for $40. Is that a good deal?
