The sweater curse is real, though. (it mostly comes down to non-crafters not appreciating the sheer amount of work hand-making something is, and a sweater being one of the biggest projects a knitter will typically embark on)
The rule is to never make your SO anything bigger than a scarf until you're married.

Everything about this is so amazing and I have absolutely no idea why it's not a movie yet.
EDIT: Starr commented that this basically would have been perfect for Don Knotts and Tim Conway in the early 70's.
