Okay, how about The person who can show you fundamental human decency but can't show fundamental human decency to the waiter is not a fundamentally decent person.

Yep.

"Nice" really just means "polite, doesn't rock the boat" anyway. It's a nearly worthless barometer of someone's actual value or character.

Your friend is a nice person... conditionally.

My issue with this line is that it never has a really definitive end. You may say he's a perfectly pleasant human being in the world to everybody on the planet except, specifically and exclusively, Mexicans from Mexico. As long as you're not, then you're cool. Okay, fine? But why that group so specifically? Because of a bad experience? Because Fox News said so? Because of some other vague source of conditioning?

Thing is, it's clearly possible to turn that guy against a specific group, so pretty much anybody could fall into the Don't Be Nice To list for whatever reason. Maybe a guy with a boyfriend will spill an egg salad in his lap tomorrow, or maybe the media will decide that there's some kind of massive Irish conspiracy to destroy America. Maybe he'll have a bad argument with a barista and he'll end up hating baristas. Who knows! Some ideas might need a bit more elbow grease to apply, but if one works it stands to reason that any of the others will eventually work too. Humans aren't born with a genetic aversion to only people of mixed Hispanic/Native American descent.

At the end of the day, the issue isn't racism, or sexism, or nationalism or any of these other isms. Those are just specific symptoms. The issue is prejudice, plain and simple, against anybody and by anybody, and any time you see a tendency towards that sort of thinking you need to put a brake on it or it's only going to grow and fester. Prejudice is what turns very nice people into perfect monsters... conditionally.

Well, that's sort of the original point of this thread of conversation. Conditionally, a lot of otherwise "nice"/"normal" people can be made into monsters. I just brought up my friend as an example of that.

I would post a picture of a wedding cake decorated with a penis here, but I occasionally check this place at work and don't want to be a hypocrite.

I think I've said this before, but it's fucking disturbing how obsessed homophobes and transphobes are with other people's genitals and what they do with them in private.

Like, they seem incapable of hearing the word "gay" without going straight to picturing anal sex.

Probably has something to do with most homophobic religions historically referring to homosexuals as sodomites.

That still leaves the direction of the cause <=> effect arrow as an open question.

I spent like 3 minutes staring at that picture wondering what the fuck the intended message was. Too much TV/Electronics will kill you? I mean, I guess?

Then I finally saw that the 'paddles' were books.

I wonder when books first came out, and everyone was talking about how books were going to ruin oral learning/teaching forever, (yes that is a thing that happened) did someone draw something like this but the books were bad/everywhere and there was a guy in a toga coming to the rescue

The answer is yes btw

Also, A Million Ways to Die In The West is utter garbage McFarlane trash, don't see it under any circumstances unless you consider a man pooping his pants for 2 minutes straight is hilarious, but it did have this one sublime scene:

It did! We all have shittier memories now!

But the point is that books are basically an early form of augmented human. You take some human memory and supplant it with something far more permanent and transferable (and, in theory, more accurate). The internet just takes this on a step further.

Jesus did live in Egypt for three-and-a-half years. But it was not illegal. If He had broken the law then He would have been sinful and He would not have been our Messiah.
