Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
Does the inevitable collapse of the world's largest social media network deserve its own thread, independent of Elon Muskery?
I don't know, but I liked the title I came up with.
Anyway,

Re: Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
Twitter feels like a city in the midst of a coup or revolution—it's a dangerous place to be if you're a powerful figure of some notoriety, it's bad for businesses, there's a sense that everything could burn down at any moment, and prominent figures keep disappearing, sometimes never to be seen again. It's chaos.

The obvious solution is to keep Musk rich so he can go on buying things
Re: Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
Moving this from the ElonGate thread to the TweetleDee thread
Between midjourney and paint.net, I've managed to create this Twitter propaganda poster meme template
Btw, I duckduck'd for the font from the original "I want YOU" poster, and found this link with the advice that some height adjustment may be necessary

How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

there's too many options now
Re: Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
Someone needs to pony up to "verify" Italian Elon Musk asap
Placeholder for something witty that doesn't make me sound like an asshole
Re: Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
As I understand it, the current status of verification is that you can't actually buy verification right now, and also the Official badge is back but only if you're advertising on Twitter because "hey, I know we crashed billions of dollars off your valuation, but I'm gonna need you to send us some protection money or we'll do it again" is exactly Elon's pace.
Re: Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
The thing about the "Official" badge and the message distinguishing between Verified and paid Twitter Blue is that this distinction only exists on the profile. Just seeing a tweet in feed, or a screenshot of a tweet, they both look exactly the same.
This decision was made because of the weird right-wing culture of insecurity around the verification badge because they believe it was a mark that bestowed clout and status on people, rather than a verification that someone who had status outside of Twitter who needs a way of saying they are who they say they are. They're convinced it excludes anyone without the "correct" opinions even though there are plenty of verified right-wing journalists, celebrities and politicians on the site
As a result of Elon shooting himself in his own dick, though, he's fallen back on the ol' "It's a vast left-wing conspiracy" angle to avoid accountability for the thing everyone said would happen happening

I think part of the problem is that Twitter decided it should remove nazis' blue checks. Once verification became something that could be removed as a punishment, it was no longer a neutral, factual statement that someone was who they claimed to be.
The correct solution would have been to just fucking ban them. But then, of course I'd say that.

Yeah it's amazing and needs to get used ASAP.
Re: Twitter Dee & Twitter Dumb
I remember there being a fuss over the Twitter verified badges years ago. At first, it was to protect celebrities from impersonation. Because only major celebrities had the blue tick, it became a status symbol. Now that anyone can get a blue tick for $8/month, it serves neither purpose. It doesn't serve as a verification mark, since it doesn't verify anything, and it's no longer a symbol of status.

The funny thing about imposter syndrome is that large orgs of all sorts are indeed full of imposters.
A few of them worry about imposter syndrome too. Most don't.
