Damn.

Goddamn.

Still sad I never was able to manage to go to see him play at Blueberry Hill in St. Louis after discovering he still played live once a month.

EDIT:

Bernie Wrightson, just weeks after announcing his retirement due to illness (I don't believe he specified at the time that he had brain cancer, but he did).

I just got Frankenstein Alive, Alive! in a Humble Bundle (no longer available). Guess now's the time to give it a read.

Don Rickles, age 90. That's a pretty good run.

Damn. To be honest I thought he was gone already.

But yeah, he didn't go out owing anyone a show.

Carolyn Kelly, an artist best known for her work restoring, archiving, and collecting Pogo, the classic comic strip created by her father, Walt Kelly.

Yeah, I didn't want to focus too much on that (I figured I was already defining her in terms of her relationship to one man, and didn't want to make it two), but that explains his lack of blogging lately.

I gather that, while they split up a couple of times, they were a couple when she passed (though they apparently didn't live together). Mark referred to her periodically on the blog.

Hell of an obit to have to write. Condolences to him and the rest of her loved ones.

Rough on the poor guy, no doubt. He's already fallen into the seat of the guy doing comics-industry obits, which has to wear on him sometimes as it is.

I have some old Pogos but very few (Off the top of my head, Potluck... and maybe that's it? Read a couple other borrowed ones but it's been years and years). I'd love to pick up the new Fantagraphics reprints - it's interesting to know how much of her work is in that. I had planned to when I was at my old job, but they were delayed and delayed and I don't have that kind of spare dosh now that they're seeing the light of day. Now those delays don't seem half so abstract as they did back then (though I think also a lot of the original material was in poor condition, at least that's what Peter said at the Beguiling).

They're still on the (very short) shortlist though, as I can imagine few comics more worthwhile (the other classic reprint collection I think of is the Segar Popeye ones you got).

Yeah, they've been on my to-buy list for ages, but I've bought so many comics I haven't read yet as it is. Still haven't finished the first Gottfredson Mickey Mouse collection, or even started that Segar Popeye. (I've only got one of the Popeye books; I think it's volume 3.)

And yeah, as you say, the delays were probably due to a combination of her health issues and the condition of the earliest strips. ME says in the obit that, while it of course won't be the same without her, the later books shouldn't need as much restoration work.
