We own two houses and have a little sister here to think about. Can't always think about yourself, guys. As to where I'd want to go, Seattle, Boston or NYC. :D Also third grade is not three mongrel.

Needing to stay for other folks' sake is absolutely fair, but home ownership doesn't actually sound like a super-strong reason to stay in a town. I'm sure you could sell two and buy one in a more expensive market? Unless maybe your sister prefers living there, so if you moved she really wouldn't have a place.

EDIT: I don't mean for this to sound like I'm badgering you guys to move. You've got your reasons and that's 100% perfectly fine.

It's not trivial to sell/buy owned land. It'll probably take those guys 3-6 months of paperwork if they want to continue being homeowners in another location. I'm about in the same boat, minus the dependent sister (MY dependent sister lives in another city at least).

Sure, I just mean that if that was the only barrier, it's by no means insurmountable.

Not one for the obituaries thread yet, but Jimmy Carter has metastatic cancer.

That's been the case for years now, it's just that we're paying attention and care at the moment.

WaPo: "Yelp, but for people" about to go live

You can already rate restaurants, hotels, movies, college classes, government agencies and bowel movements online.

So the most surprising thing about Peeple — basically Yelp, but for humans — may be the fact that no one has yet had the gall to launch something like it.

When the app does launch, probably in late November, you will be able to assign reviews and one- to five-star ratings to everyone you know: your exes, your co-workers, the old guy who lives next door. You can’t opt out — once someone puts your name in the Peeple system, it’s there unless you violate the site’s terms of service. And you can’t delete bad or biased reviews — that would defeat the whole purpose.

Imagine every interaction you’ve ever had suddenly open to the scrutiny of the Internet public.

“People do so much research when they buy a car or make those kinds of decisions,” said Julia Cordray, one of the app’s founders. “Why not do the same kind of research on other aspects of your life?”

Nobody's ever going to be able to prove libel against the site, so what lawsuits do you think they'd have to worry about?

So far my favourite quote from that woman is "All that matters is what people say about us."

I have to question if she is ever happy.

Also this reminds me of how there's one review aggregator website - I can't be sure, but I think it was Yelp - that if you have a business account and you close it, they delete your positive reviews and leave up the bad ones. I'm not sure if this one sounds classier or not.

In any case, the whole business model this kind of thing rests on being able to anonymously review people who haven't opted in. This has a wall and may be getting a double-wall (you have to go to the effort of pretending to be a real person, and maybe they really will change it to be opt-in only?), which makes Peeple kinda-sorta more defensible, but I don't see a closed, inbred review system actually going anywhere. The only way it could *potentially* see heavy traffic is as a vast cesspit of negativity predicated on being able to slag people, because you don't need something like this to talk nice about people.

It's adorable that there are still people who think they can prevent pseudonymous postings on the Internet.

I'm pretty sure it is Yelp that extorts businesses for positive reviews, yes. (The x makes it sound cool.)

I'm just wondering what the conversion is like between Peeple rating and MeowMeowBeenz.

Well, this story just keeps getting more interesting.

Snopes: Peeple may be entirely a hoax. Or even some sort of scam.

That would explain a lot. We're pretty deep into Poe's Law territory here.
