Surprising nobody.

Re: Who watches the Watchmen?
The ludicrous idea behind proposed dystopias is that it's always unwilling. The perspectives we get are of bastions of sanity, remembering, or urging for with no direct knowledge of, freedoms of the past. No one is going to come take this information.
I let google read everything I do online because between email, storage space and searches they make aggregating the information I want to consume easier. Some day a medical company will have a 3d model of my exact physical form with a map of my genome because it'll mean that without going to the doctor I can be prescribed medication before I even feel symptoms.
And that's only what I know and am willing to give up in barter. I don't use facebook because I don't want someone else to own everything I put up there and use it as they will. But the minute a VR Second Life hits mainstream and becomes a standard of social interaction I'll immediately forget that I've given them the right to post images of my anime catgirl orgies up on billboards for advertisement because that 'risk' is nothing compared to the rewards of... you know, anime catgirl orgies.

Someone, somewhere, owes George Orwell a drink.

During Zuckerberg's testimony on Tuesday, Dick Durbin asked Zuckerberg, "Would you be willing to tell us which hotel you stayed in last night? And everybody you messaged yesterday?"

Perfectly good and normal government:

ICE held an American man in custody for 1,273 days. He’s not the only one who had to prove his citizenship
Immigration officers in the United States operate under a cardinal rule: Keep your hands off Americans.
But Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents repeatedly target U.S. citizens for deportation by mistake, making wrongful arrests based on incomplete government records, bad data and lax investigations, according to a Times review of federal lawsuits, internal ICE documents and interviews.
Since 2012, ICE has released from its custody more than 1,480 people after investigating their citizenship claims, according to agency figures. And a Times review of Department of Justice records and interviews with immigration attorneys uncovered hundreds of additional cases in the country’s immigration courts in which people were forced to prove they are Americans and sometimes spent months or even years in detention.

Has anyone else heard or posted about China trying a government-run social credit score? Because this is some Black Mirror shit.
Between this and all the various internet/tech companies stalking us all the time... I can't be the only one who just wants to disappear, or at least blend into the background like some highly-strung octopus.

Re: Who watches the Watchmen?
If it happened over here, I can certainly imagine enough people tanking it on purpose to make it useless. Just spend a few hours jaywalking back and forth in front of a camera, take it to zero and get it over with.
Re: Who watches the Watchmen?
I saw something about it on Extra Credit? a few years back. Nice to see it's getting more mainstream coverage, because holy shit it's Big Brother as fuck.

I want to comment but I don't think I could draw a rational comparison without knowing exactly what information comes up on an American cop's dashboard when they pull you over.

It just doesn't make sense to us because your value is based off social and economic factors and not just economic* like we're used to.

At least that information isn't (yet) used to decide who you're allowed to marry or whether you're allowed to buy a home.

I mean, your felony/service record and credit score totally ARE used for that second one, so.

I mean, this isn't news, really...
Re: Who watches the Watchmen?
The Met are back, rolling out public trials of cyberpunk dystopia facial recognition cameras, then having the attending officers detain anyone who tries to avoid taking part, yell at them until they swear back, then arrest and fine them for causing a disturbance.
