The Internet Noise Machine
I'd be the last person to have anything to do with "Celebrity News", but I thought this bit from Alec Baldwin of all people was very well written.

I'm not sure if he did or didn't say what he claims he didn't say. People who grow up doing X and learn that X is bad and change their ways may still lapse back into bad behaviour which is now seen as over-the-line bad behaviour from time to time - I've made that sort of slip myself. But even if he did, I think I can sympathize with this story as presented.
If nothing else it's a damn sight more eloquent and entertaining to read than a Twitter meltdown or Weekly World News headline.

Re: Celebrity news you can stomach
I don't really know what there is to say in response to that. It's a fascinating and thought-provoking read.
Re: Celebrity news you can stomach
Title misleading. He isn't quitting acting.
Well-written article on his recent experiences with being in the public arena, though, and a fun look at MSNBC internal politics.

Found something sort of related to the article above, so I renamed this thread to be more general-purpose. Discussion of internet lynch mobs, twitter wars and the like can be dumped here.
The Culture Of "Shut Up"
Great Atlantic piece on online cacophony and the casual stifling of dissent.

Very roundabout and rambly. There may be a good message in that article, but I couldn't handle the author's mode of delivery.

Yeah, that's a terribly-written article. Not every topical sentence needs to branch into a tangential paragraph. Dude really needed an editor.

Re: The Internet Noise Machine
The funny part is that he was an Obama speechwriter for three years.
Re: The Internet Noise Machine
Speeches and written works are not the same thing.
Re: The Internet Noise Machine
Also, Obama's speechwriters probably still have someone edit their stuff.
Re: The Internet Noise Machine
Also, speeches going off on tangents every paragraph to prove a specific point are... well that's kind of what they're supposed to do.

Re: The Internet Noise Machine
I believe you guys have made your point.
I still like the article, but maybe because that's the way I talk regularly anyway.

Re: The Internet Noise Machine
So what you're saying is, that guy needs to shut up?
Re: The Internet Noise Machine
Dunno where else to put this, but this used to be the celebrity news thread and this kind of counts I guess.
Harlan Ellison has suffered a stroke and his right arm and leg are paralyzed, BUT mentally he's doing fine. Mark Evanier and Alan Brennert visited him in the hospital and the former has reposted a summary written by the latter.
