The really depressing thing is that I had an internet friend just do the usual crazy bitcoin shit and dump a ton of his money into it. I almost feel bad about him losing most of his money via price fluctuation. At least he didn't have enough time to put anything into MTGOX. Honestly though he's been making bad decisions since I've known him so its really just another hilarious story, this time with major financial repercussions.

Bitcoin has rebounded to $570, meaning either people still trust it after the fall of MtGox or someone has been doing an iron effort to keep the numbers up.

Or it's just a case of "With all the recent trouble, now's a GREAT time to buy!"

Buy low sell high. It's a stable currency nothing will go wrong with it.

It might not be true that MtGox was ever a Magic trading site, which is possibly the saddest part of this whole affair.

Fortunately their security will always remain hilarious:

Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of Bitcoin, tracked down and identified.

Turns out he's not this amazing young tech messiah, he's a grumpy 64-year-old model train weirdo who just wanted a way to order more trains from England without paying wire transfer fees.

Bitcoiners are alternately denouncing him, praising him, or talking about killing him.

So the inventor of Bitcoin is an brilliant but obsessive nerd that is suspicious of all human interaction? FUCKING IMAGINE THAT

“Bitcoin actually started as a way for the tiny passengers on my model trains to purchase refreshments from the eensy-weensy snack cart in Car Seven,” Nakamoto explained, chuckling self-deprecatingly. “I had no idea that it would become such a force of its own.”

Well, he also (allegedly) lost his house and, via Ars quoting a paywalled Newsweek story:

As [Newsweek reporter Leah McGrath] Goodman wrote, "Ilene Mitchell says she isn't surprised her father would choose to stay under cover if he was the man behind this venture, especially as he is currently concerned about his health. 'He is very wary of government interference in general,' she says. 'When I was little, there was a game we used to play. He would say, 'Pretend the government agencies are coming after you.' And I would hide in the closet.'"

Meanwhile, Ars Technica creates its own cryptocurrency, redeemable only at Ars Technica and only for silly, inconsequential things. It's pretty much like pyos. Article is well worth reading as a general overview of how forking your own altcoin works and what the tech behind this stuff is anyway.

Scrypt creator Colin Percival:
I think the whole idea of proof-of-work is rather horrible in that we have millions of dollars being spent on computing things for no real benefit, just competing against each other. In an economic sense, this is incredibly wasteful. It’s like the Olympics without the entertainment value.

Oh, I dunno, I'm pretty entertained.

But it's only entertainment for people who enjoy irony. I have a feeling that's a much smaller set than the people who enjoy sports.

Pyocoin/Brontocoin cryptocurrency when

It should be said that people aren't entirely convinced that the Satoshi in the article is the actual Satoshi behind bitcoin.
