Barnes and Noble's new boss is James Daunt, who rescued the UK's Waterstones

This is good news. When I heard B&N had been purchased by a private equity firm, I thought of Sears/Kmart and assumed the buyers intended to suck it dry, take the money, and run. But this indicates that at least somebody who's in a position to call some shots actually cares about trying to save the company.

Once Mr. Daunt commences his overhaul of Barnes & Noble, he will again try to turn a large chain into what looks and feels like a collection of independent bookstores. Again, he will do battle with a culture of stifling uniformity.

“Each store was told: ‘This is your display. This book should be in this exact spot,’” recalled Steve Galindo, an Oklahoma resident who worked at three Barnes & Noble stores over 17 years before being laid off in February. “Individuality was often something you got in trouble for.”

Barnes & Noble’s staff needs to feel a sense of agency, Mr. Daunt said.

David Byrne has launched a website at reasonstobecheerful.world. I haven't read anything beyond the headlines yet, but its purpose seems to be much the same purpose as this thread.

And Byrne himself is always a reason to be cheerful.

Latest Papal Synod moves serious proposal to allow married priests and female Deacons

The Catholic Church under Francis hasn't always got things right lately, and as always they're still centuries behind (to which my response is usually "it's the Catholic Church; being behind the times is what they do."), but this will be a really nice positive move forward if it goes through.

It wouldn't stop the problem of creepy molesting priests entirely, but allowing normal married people as ministers would probably be the single biggest practical thing they could do to help prevent that (that, and stop covering for the ones who get found out... but they're at least working on that too, even if they're still backsliding sometimes).

Like I said, it's the Catholic Church. Baby steps. And this is a pretty big baby step.

Previously:

Thad wrote:So, remember Florida's Amendment 4? It restored voting rights to felons who completed their sentences and probation (excluding convicted murderers and felony sex offenders).

Or it was supposed to. Unsurprisingly, the Florida GOP has done what it can to sabotage the amendment; they've passed a law saying felons must pay fines and court fees before they're eligible to vote. The Florida Supreme Court has upheld the requirement.

Limits on Florida’s Amendment 4 are unconstitutional, federal panel rules

The article is kind of a fucking mess and should have had at least one more editing pass before publication; it has multiple paragraphs that just stop in mid-sentence. So I'm not sure what all this means. But it's definitely a step in the right direction.

US judge sides with migrants in case against Border Patrol

The order makes permanent a preliminary injunction that U.S. District Court Judge David C. Bury issued in 2016 requiring the Tucson Sector to provide clean mats and thin blankets to migrants held for longer than 12 hours and to allow them to clean themselves.

It also bars the agency from holding migrants more than 48 hours if they’ve been fully processed, which is common when other agencies involved in taking the migrants, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, don’t have the capacity to pick them up in a reasonable amount of time.

Yeah, Tucson is pretty fraught right now on the topic of Trump and his various border policies. They're all bad, of course, but they're particularly hurting the area right now.

Judge orders Chelsea Manning's release from jail in Virginia

This is after a suicide attempt, and they didn't cancel the bogus fines they'd been charging her... but it's freedom.

Well, this ruling might wind up unravelling ALL of Trumps anti-Quiltbag executive orders. Per one of the MTG board lawyers (a top reference for constitutional law, I know, I know)

The ACA prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability under any health program or activity that receives Federal financial assistance, or under any program or activity that is administered by an executive agency under Title I of the PPACA or by an entity established under such Title. It invokes Title VI of the CRA and Title IX of the education amendments as fellow legislation in the area.

So it would be unlikely for the court to say that LGBTQ+ protections apply to sex protections of title VII of the CRA, but not to the sex protections of Title IX or the ACA’s sex protections.

The ruling doesn’t immediately void the rules, but it does lay a great foundation for challenging them, and having them stayed as the case winds its way towards SCOTUS.

So it’s not the CRA alone and unto itself, but it’s an indication of how 6 of the 9 justices interpret sex protections related to LGBTQ+. Carrying it along to ACA shouldn’t be too big of a lift.
/end speculation

The immediate possibility of stays is probably the most impactful aspect of this. Also 2 out of 3 lower circuit courts sided with this ruling before it got to SCOTUS.

I'm sure nobody missed this one, but just for the permanent record: The Kids are Alright.

"... Before the rally the Trump campaign had been bragging that a million people had reserved (but not paid for) tickets. They made people sign waivers absolving the Trump campaign of any responsibility if they got sick as a result of the rally, and they effectively banned people from wearing masks ..."
