Rooty-tooty point and shootys
Re: Rooty-tooty point and shootys
This week's Wonkette episode on deleted comments had a guy yelling, among other things, that "assault weapons" don't exist blah blah blah.

I glanced at this topic and my reaction keeps being "Obviously he's being facetious" before realizing that irony has been dead for a while.
This is basically why I'm unable to communicate with people now.

Re: Rooty-tooty point and shootys
"Assault weapons" is more of a casual colloquialism no real clear boundaries rather than a legally-defined class with precise characteristics, so it's not a really USEFUL term. But yeah it's a bit silly to say no such thing exists at all when even the gun crowd themselves embrace it at times. That comment is pretty much always an indicator of some pedant who just wants to shoot shout at people.

Re: Rooty-tooty point and shootys
Considering Sandy Hook conspiracy nuts, I wouldn't exactly say that was a difficult prediction.
But still.

I 100% agree with that being a really heart touching story and how fucking horrible gun control is in this country

Oopsies!
Re: Rooty-tooty point and shootys
The kids are all right. They give me hope that things are going to change.
Not quickly. But I think this time, the discussion might not end with the news cycle.
Obviously they're never going to convince the Fox News crowd to change their minds (and man, "Fox News went off the deep end" is a weird sentence to write but it's true; ranting about false flags and paid actors used to just be Alex Jones's thing), but they don't have to. They just have to convince enough of the large majority that favors tighter gun restrictions to treat that as just as strong a litmus test as the anti-gun control minority does, and turn out to vote in greater numbers. That's not an easy task, but it feels more like an attainable one today than it did a week ago.
In the near term, the best we can reasonably hope for is a bump stock ban and a few token changes to background check policy -- and if I'm being honest, I don't even expect those to pass. But in the long term...well, maybe this comes to nothing, but maybe it's a turning point.

I mean, as it starts hitting them in their wallets you might see change happening faster - although I maintain my disagreement that "military-style" guns aren't the problem and that the better route is "make it obnoxious and inconvenient to buy guns" because that's the only thing that's actually worked in my buying-guns-in-New-York experience.
Re: Rooty-tooty point and shootys
I feel like even explaining why we shouldn't arm teachers is a mistake. It's one of those things where Democrats are allowing Republicans to set the terms of the debate and put them on the defensive.
The correct response to "Should we arm teachers?" is a snort, an eyeroll, and "Can we please talk about real stuff?"
Because every minute we spend debating the stupid, stupid question of whether we should arm teachers is a minute we're not spending talking about real stuff. And that's the whole point. It's an NRA talking point designed as a distraction, and it's working.

The only solution to a teacher with a gun is a student with a gun.

USA Today wrote:The Georgia legislature removed a jet-fuel tax break from a larger tax package Thursday. Lawmakers were upset that Delta, which is headquartered in Atlanta, dropped the National Rifle Association from a discount-fare program in an effort to appear neutral on gun policy.
After the firestorm, Delta will review all its marketing programs to avoid those that might become political, CEO Ed Bastian announced Friday.
But the airline said only 13 passengers ever bought tickets with an NRA discount. That translates into each discount costing the airline about $3 million in tax breaks.

Wait a goddamned minute... Trump blamed, among other things, violent video games for the latest mass shooting. Okay, but who the hell are these guys? Kinda looks like the president's sons posing with wild animals they killed for fun.
Not like some of us who just put balloons on wild animals instead.
