Harper appearing in photos with Rob Ford probably didn't help.

CBC's already projecting a Liberal government, which seems oddly early. Pretty sure polls are still open in BC for another quarter hour at least?

They're extrapolating from the existing results, clearly. Which means 100% Liberal.

How screwed is Canada with Trudeau instead of Harper, assuming the prediction holds? More screwed or less?

The Liberals use lube and condoms. The Conservatives go in dry.

But Buge, Canadians gave them a MANDATE to go in dry. REMEMBER?

My riding in the west end was hard fought, but not that surprisingly went to the Liberal. It's historically a liberal ridding, Peggy Nash's (NDP) victory last election was part of the unprecedented NDP wave that occurred when the Liberal Party was in a shambles.

I haven't looked into it scientifically much, but I always assumed 2011's huge NDP result was a backlash of left wing voters in Canada losing faith in the Liberal party after they failed to unseat Harper under Dion with the added appeal of Jack Layton becoming a house hold name in the years since that election. The left wanted a leader, they wanted to feel like they could win and so when the Liberals tepidly made some random American guy with a weird name their leader, suddenly everyone became a trade unionist. It does support the notion though that a lot of Canadians actually want the NDP in power but just vote Liberal with the more moderate voters because they believe it's the only way to keep the far right out of power. Things would be a lot more representative if the conservatives and Reform party were actually separate parties again. It would make people like my dad actually vote for the right party, the Progressive Conservative party. My dad is not socially conservative, he just hates the Liberal party. This situation of a consolidated right against 2 (3 if you count the greens) left wing parties with the Bloc Québécois, pointlessly freezing up some Québec seats, keeps leading to an unrepresentative government of what the people actually want.

No one wants Justin Trudeau to be the prime minister of Canada, at least, way less people want that than voted Liberal this election. They just want Harper out. Justin Trudeau had a known name that people can remember and the conservative smear campaign kept him in people's minds.

Justin Trudeau, Justin Trudeau! We're scared of him, we think he might beat us! Justin Trudeau, Justin Trudeau!

Honestly, I don't even think he had that much momentum; the NDP just lost theirs, that's all. Left wing analysts and journalists are going to play up that Justin ran a good campaign but I honestly don't think that was the main contributing factor. I think that after Layton died, the NDP leader that replaced him didn't have the charisma or fame necessary to keep the NDP dream alive. Lefties got scared and flocked back to the Liberal banner, resigning themselves to Trudeau because they thought his name and his boyish good looks would carry the day with mush-heads.

I voted NDP because I thought the Conservatives had no chance in hell of winning my riding (they didn't) and that Peggy Nash was a good MP and had a good shot and winning re-election (she did, she only narrowly lost). The NDP and the green party are the only two parties that talked about the environment and climate change at all this election. Any party who doesn't think it needs to be at the top of the agenda never mind even just seriously discussed, doesn't get my vote anymore. Sadly the Liberals won. Yes I'm glad that the Reform party in progressive conservative clothing didn't win again, but you'll excuse me for not being psyched about being ruled by the OTHER business as usual party.

Does global warming eventually lead to the seven trumpets being sounded? Anyway, I'm glad Canada is following the United States' lead and is moving away from democracy and towards a more nostalgic form of government where leaders are chosen based on heredity or marriage.

I will say that if Layton was still alive, he'd have stomped all over this election.

So far my favourite meme to come out of this is Canadians posting "THAT'S IT. I'M MOVING TO CANADA."

"Did you just summon a bunch of conservatives in one turn?"
"Yeah, so?"
"That's against the rules, isn't it?"
"Screw the rules, I have money!"
