Liana K comes in with an interesting perspective/criticism on/of Anita Sarkeesian. Actually made me feel more sympathetic to Sarkeesian.

Re: GooberGoats
Today in bullshit:
Mark Kern, a terrible, incompetent human being, responds to "GrumpGate is harassing my children" with "But what about the VIDEO GAMES?"
But it's not about harassment.
Upset at being blocked, DrumpGate publicly broadcasts how to break the automated blocking people have set up.
But GuiltyGate doesn't harass people.
Patient Zero of GrepGate mentions she's still getting daily rape threats and it's all but killed any desire to do anything in her industry.
But GorpGate isn't about killing video games, it's about protecting them.
Fuck this shit.

Dumb argument on Kern's part, but no one harassed Kluwe's children. I actually typed in the url address in that picture and actually looked at what was written. Uncool? Yeah. Overdramatic? Absolutely. Threatening? Not particularly.
Not that Chris Kluwe's anger is unjustified. It was a thoughtless remark.

I'm not on twitter, so I'm not exactly familiar with all the whatnots, so you'll have to forgive me for talking out of my ass a little (at least on this):
From what I've been able to gather about it, though, when you're blocked by someone on twitter you can't even view their twitter page. Also apparently the blocker is hilariously overzealous, putting on the blacklist not just your pro-GGers, but people neutral on it as well, and even a few anti-GGers and even completely unrelated twitter accounts (I think a pizza place account or something similar was on that list a while ago, I'm not sure if I'm remembering that clearly). You could find yourself on that list just for following the wrong person.
Also, the tweet only says that this is a way around the blockbot. I assume manually blocking people still works.

... I got nothing. People should never have been sending Quinn any sort of harassment, and especially not now so long after she fell out of the spotlight. She's still a scumbag, though.
Well, if all else fails, I suppose Chelsea van Valkenburg can always come up with another pseudonym.

So much ethics!
Honestly though, why even say shit like this? We get it, you don't have to be a asshole EVERYtime you post.

Did... did you actually not realize that #ScreamingGoats was active and persistently harassing people, until now? Because THIS activity is what all of us have been yelling at you about. Because this was the origin of #ScreamingGoats: Harassing Zoe Quinn because she's an evil slutty slut slut. It was half-assed justified as being about ethics in games journalism, but "harassing Zoe Quinn" was literally the origin of #ScreamingGoats.

DNi's comment there looks less like a Parthian shot and more like recognition that despite her being a bad person by his appraisal, she didn't deserve dogpiling by the Internet's worst.
I get that the greater context of this thread hasn't exactly endeared him to you, but calling him an asshole there seems uncalled for. I'm not making a tone argument or anything; just pointing out that things here seem to continually re-escalate without much of a trigger being needed.
It seems like there's consensus that pretty much everything surrounding GabenGape, on either side, is toxic. What are people getting out of discussing it?

Yes, I've been well aware that there have been assholes doing asshole things on the pro-GG side of things. Something you don't seem to realize is the anti-GG side is even more full of assholes doing even more assholish things. Like, pro-GG people have lost jobs over GamerGate.
And when I say 'lost their jobs,' I don't mean that they were writers for a website who were being paid to have an opinion and then had an opinion that didn't sell. I'm talking about people who've been doxxed and had their place of employment contacted by people with the explicit intention of ruining that person's life over something they said on twitter. For example: the black guy who started #NotYourShield.

1. That's terrible.
2. That changes absolutely nothing.
There are only so many different ways we can try to communicate that.
Re: GooberGoats
If I were an employer, and I had two employees, one of whom supported a cause that was built on harassing women, and one of whom fought against the same cause, I would fire the former without blinking.

Now, the doxxing is problematic. Two wrongs don't make a right, and if it was more serious than just Googling public info from the Twitter profile the people who did it should definitely be investigated by law enforcement. Buuuut... if you're saying publically something horrible enough to get you instantly fired for it if your employer finds out it's you... well, let's just say I'm not sympathetic.

Re: GooberGoats
wait, so
let me see if I can get this straight
bugging someone on social media over something horrible they said is the worst most misogynistic thing imaginable
ruining someone's life over something horrible they said is no big deal

Now, I get where in your view being fired for saying something terrible is similarly disproportionate but as an employer I can pretty confidently say that no one is getting fired for saying one horrible thing (it's not really worth the risk of a lawsuit) unless it's either really horrible or lines up with existing workplace behavior and is just one more piece of evidence in the file.
ps sorry it looks like this board doesn't support resizing in the img tag.

Harassing someone on social media for their gender is horrible and misogynistic.
Getting fired for supporting (and let's face it, often committing with #ScreamingGoats) hate crimes is 100% understandable.
Re: GooberGoats
Details are hard to find about the guy but it looks like he may not have really said anything bad but he was the social media manager for the company, so I have some actual sympathy but that job carries a very particular set of (usually in-the-contract) obligations about personal social media presence. Since he admits the company has been failing since 2007 and will probably be closed soon, my guess is that they were about to let him go anyway and this just made it ever-so-slightly easier from an HR perspective.

In unrelated news, Chris Mancil over at EA called Ben Kuchera a big dummy, and Ben Kuchera threw a hissy fit. And that's how a third hashtag was born: #LetDevsSpeak

Re: GooberGoats
I get some of Mancil's post--I often follow and read opposing news sources for the perspective - -but it kind of sounds like he doesn't get that people have a choice about installing the autoblocker. No one's saying devs can't speak. Just that not everyone is required to listen.
Haven't really read Kutchera.

Things to remember:
There's no anti-GG side. There is, at best, a side interested in punishing misogynists.
It's not "assholes doing asshole things" within gooberGoats. It's more and more obviously the rank-and-file.
Yes. It's horrible that some gooberGoats have been harassed. Isn't it interesting though that no one is trying to suggest that they're faking it for publicity?
That still doesn't change anything, because gooberGoats is a thin veneer for the an effort by misogynists to keep from being confronted by uncomfortable ideas in spaces that they incorrectly presume to own.

At this point no one is taking this seriously, but can people calling DNi out on victim blaming please not do it themselves? Someone got fired over internet opinions. Your later point about him specifically being in charge of social media for his company is a compelling point as to why it's more understandable that he was fired, but this basically boils down to "if they fired him he was probably asking for it".

I'm assuming you're counting #notyourshield as hashtag 2 and not either #quinnspiracy or #fiveguys as hashtag one. Which is good in a way because I do believe you don't consider the slut shaming side of the operation to be a part of what you're supporting. But bad in the way worse way that you're not acknowledging that the movement you're aiding started as a joke about the men a game dev slept with.
