Yeah, that sounds about right given what's happened over the past week.

Makes sense.

Oh, they're keeping the guy whose reaction to this situation was, and I quote, "Popcorn is delicious."

That...

...well okay that's actually totally fucking unsurprising.

At least Ellen Pao had a sense of humor about the whole thing.

Maybe a threadsplit for the Reddit stuff?

Daily Beast: Terrorists Win: Why Web 2.0 marketing is a lie and Reddit is doomed

The title is floridly overblown, but the article itself is a good takedown not just of Reddit, but all the major social sites today which are trying to make money off of free "content production" by an unregulated community and the idea that making money in that way is even possible. He doesn't mention 4chan, but I guess that's the original progenitor for the idea that an unpoliced ball pit will generate all the content on the internet.

Per a former Reddit admin, Pao was the only person keeping a massive subreddit purge from happening, as she wanted to keep the idea of free speech going.

Because she got chucked, the board, and the now current CEO, can begin a massive purge of the entire site, the exact thing everyone was convinced Pao was going to do.

Reddit crusaded their actual protector right into the streets.

Also it turns out Alexis Ohanian -- you know, the "popcorn is delicious" guy who wasn't ousted -- was personally responsible for firing Victoria Taylor, and Pao had absolutely nothing to do with it.

That so large and vocal a chunk of Reddit's userbase automatically blamed it all on the Asian woman while assuming the white guy was on their side is pretty much exactly the problem.

Statistically, at least a few of them will have the self-awareness to recognize the irony and take a long hard look at themselves.

I'm not saying it'll be very many.

Do we want to bother throwing the older posts in here? I don't care, just mentioning it just-in-case.

This will forever be my go-to story for someone who thinks Reddit is infallible or even double-checks things before posting them for leet reddit points.

Among other issues, Alex Ohanian appears to have a consistency problem.

It's almost odd how public all this is.

Because they don't know the real quote, which is "Bad publicity is better than no publicity". There's if definitely bad publicity, and if you have the choice you don't want it.

Regardless of how it's sliced, that phrase always makes me chuckle a bit. Damn right any of us can think of loads of times when no publicity is very much better than bad publicity.
