"Russia has expressed outrage at a fatal shooting in eastern Ukraine which it blamed on Ukrainian nationalists." The nationalist group in question denies any involvement, and the Ukrainian government isn't convinced either.

What's that faint whispering I hear? It sounds like a voice saying casus belli... casus belli....

And it didn't even have to be an archduke this time.

Who can take tomorrow,
Dip it in a dream,
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream,
The Candy Man Can...?

Yeah, and the early reports are saying no survivors. So at best, it was some kind of malfunction, and it's a goddamn tragedy. If it was actually shot down, no matter which side did it, it's a fucking mass murder.

It probably won't come to anything but, uh, apparently Putin hasn't been seen by anyone in over a week?

note: This has happened before. He probably hides out in a cavern and eats babies or something to replenish his strength.

I'm hearing that he's got meetings and such lined up for next week. Meetings that were confidently scheduled within the last few days.

From Vox:
The Kremlin has released photos and news footage of Putin in recent days, but that has not been enough to quell the rumors, and some suspect the photos could be from an older event. On Friday, the Kremlin announced that Putin will meet with Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambaev in St. Petersburg this Monday, suggesting confidence that Putin's absence is temporary.

Just to bring the renewed discussion about the heightening tensions in Ukraine back to this thread, it looks like Russia's seized several Ukrainian ships near Crimea... on the 85th anniversary of Holodomor, no less.

Oh nice, I missed that particular detail.

Also, the reason this all started is because there's a narrow isthmus between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Ukraine has several important shipping ports in the sea of Azov and according to international law and a treaty with Russia, they should have full navigation rights.

The isthmus is in fact so narrow that you could block it with a single oil tanker placed sideways. Which is exactly what the Russians did this morning.
