Wasn't there a lawsuit that already set a precedent that streaming falls under fair use?

That was my impression, but guy there seems pretty certain it's actionable but developers don't bother because it makes them money.

I think a lawyer could argue that PDP being a racist could impose some loss of sale or reputation on them which wouldn't be covered under fair use, or so I'm told I don't know I'm not a lawyer.

Fair use is a far higher standard than people think it is. "But I talked over it" doesn't mean shit.

Reddit knows who pays the bills, which is sadly largely r/the_donald and the other alt-right subreddits. I can't find it now, but someone did some poking and found that r/t_d has paid for three years of server costs already. Same thing with Twitter, if they ban anyone shouting hate speech, they lose huge amounts of people, leading to less money from ads. Also, Twitter really likes to verify alt-right people, giving them way more power than they should.

Is that from members buying each other gold stars, or are their eyeballs just worth more to advertisers?

Members buying gold stars for each other. Plus, probably sheer numbers too, because I'm sure the bots are counted in the numbers reported to the advertisers.

Oh yeah, adview inflation via bots is insanely rampant everywhere and I would imagine GG subreddits would be very fertile ground for that sort of thing as well as being full of folks capable of creating said bots.

... If you'd told me back in the nineties that the internet would need a microtransaction economy to avoid the rise of a global fourth reich I'd have filed you alongside David Icke.

Meanwhile, GG just had a massive shot in the arm from their successful direct democracy firing of ArenaNet writers and are back on the rampage. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018 ... harassment

I'm still surprised by the overwhelming volume of the positive response. Did someone find an astroturf machine idling with the keys in the dash?

"It's like the brown version of a Zamboni"
"But turf isn't bro-"

I forget... did I ever post this? It's almost as good as the 4chan guy complaining about "Cuck carts".

From the NYT archives: The Trolls Among Us

It's fascinating to go back and read this a decade later, seeing what what's become hopelessly dated and what was eerily predictive. The seeds for so much are there, but only some of them sprouted.

The bubble-like setting created by this being published only a couple months before the 2008 meltdown also gives the article a voice which seems both alien and familiar.
