Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Not so much a news item, but seeing as how this is now the largest wildfire in recorded California history, and there's plenty of fires all over CA, are you guys down there near any of this stuff?
Going by vague memory, the areas roughly near Friday or Brent seem "fine" on CA's fire map, but I dunno about anyone else?

Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
The Carr fire was close-ish to me. It's been raining ash outside for about a week. Sun is red all day through the smoke.
But I've been lucky enough to not have to evacuate. Thousands have lost their homes and some people are dead, including the people who fight the fires. This is, unfortunately, the new normal for California.
Our huge rainfall two winters ago just gave rise to a massive amount of underbrush, which served as tinder for the fires.
California has always had wildfires, of course, but they're worse now because of two main factors:
1. Climate Change causing more extreme weather patterns
2. Encroaching subdivision development into the foothills, where fires are common.

Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
A fire broke out about 4 miles from where I live but then it went the other way. I ended up just looking at the smoke and thinking "oh, I hope I don't have to breath too much of that".
I took a picture of it from the roadside, and while I was doing that I found a full lighter that had been tossed right into the dry part of the planters next to my condo. So fuck everyone.

Speaking of which, northern Ontario's on fire in several places. I just got back from my parents' house, which is in a region thankfully untouched by the blazes, but there is still a total fire ban where they live.
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
So apparently Seattle is a blasted hellscape just in time for my business trip there, thanks to thunderstorms in British Columbia starting massive wildfires.
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Maybe you could redirect your trip to Beijing, which has better air quality at the moment.
But definitely don't keep going north.

Hooooly shit.
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Brazil’s National Museum was destroyed in a fire.
This means the loss of irreplaceable fossils, including the oldest fragments of prehistoric humans found in the Americas. Millions of specimens of invertebrates from a century-old collection. Archives and recordings of indigenous song and languages, many of which are extinct, as well as collections of ethnography and anthropology for cultures which are lost to history. Even the museum itself was a 200-year old building.
No, they didn't have the information stored digitally. The museum's budget has been cut to the bone.

Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
The best ("best") part of this story is the commentators blaming the Puerto Rican administration for not carrying out the local end-distribution, when they were dumped on an inaccessible airfield at the least connected end of an island where almost the entire road infrastructure outside the capital had been destroyed.
Specifically, they're calling out the "corrupt Democratic governor".
Who is actually a Republican.

I mean, I 100% agree, and we all 100% agree, but the generation he raised is not the generation in charge.
Yet.
Yet.

tl;dr, no joke, if everyone over 50 died tomorrow, but their ghosts continued to consume whatever resources they would have (in order to avoid Thanos-like cheating) but were unable to do anything else, I think we'd be fine.

Millennial: I'm worried about Climate Change literally killing tens of millions, if not billions if it escalates to war, of people
Boomer: You're lazy
Millennial: I work really hard though 45+ hours a week, and that's just to support myself
Boomer: Yeah but the economy is good right now, you know that right?
Millennial: What the fuck are you talking about
Boomer: The true threat is the brown people
Millennial: fine I'll go talk to a Democrat

Democrat Boomer: I know what I'm doing radical solutions are not called for
Millennial: sigh

Pretty much. Even 55 would work out alright.
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Honestly boomers really aren't that important. Now if we could get rid of like 2 to 3 dozen billionaire families and their companies we'd be fine.

You know what I hate about this season? All the times a character makes an incredibly stupid mistake that gets everybody else killed, manages to survive through contrivance, and still gets to be in charge for some reason.

Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
The flood ing underway in New Orleans is currently predicted to crest at more than FIVE FEET higher than Katrina's flooding did.
The Army Corps of Engineers are claiming the current levees won't be overtopped, but then the levees failed without being overtopped during Katrina, so, um.
Hard to imagine someone worse in charge than the Bush administration, but here we are. So pray for Nawliners sakes that history does not have a second, even worse, repeat in this case.
