Back in October we went to stay with some family on a military base and found that Google Maps couldn't give us directions there. The whole thing was kinda dumb; I can understand why it wouldn't have granular directions on-base, but it should at least have been able to point us to the entrance.

Also we couldn't find parking because the guest lot was closed off. We later found out this was because they were filming Top Gun 2 (and the guy who kept circling the lot on a motorcycle was Tom Cruise).

Maybe Tom Cruise was circling the parking lot because he was also lost and didn't know where to go. Did you think of that?

No. You only think of yourself.

Let's not rush to judgment; maybe Thad was excited for beach volleyball.

Two fun ones from the Legal realms...

Terence M. Brennen, a senior assistant Jefferson County attorney, filed a complaint on Aug. 16 accusing Hallett of mocking Brennen’s participation in the Snowtown Film Festival.

Brennen helped promote the festival in January 2017, but Hallett apparently told Brennan later that month that the festival, which was honoring Mortenson, “is about the gayest thing I have ever heard.”

Hallett allegedly then said: “You and Viggo Mortensen should get a hotel room and suck each other’s dicks.”

But that wasn’t all. Brennen alleges that in June 2017 Hallett made an oral sex gesture towards him, and then patted him on the cheek and said, “There, there little boy.”

...and the second.

Missouri poacher ordered to repeatedly watch 'Bambi'

David Berry Jr. was ordered to watch the Disney classic at least once a month during his year-long jail sentence in what conservation agents have called one of the largest deer poaching cases in state history, the Springfield News-Leader reports .

"The deer were trophy bucks taken illegally, mostly at night, for their heads, leaving the bodies of the deer to waste," said Don Trotter, the prosecuting attorney in Lawrence County.

...

Court records show he was ordered by Lawrence County Judge Robert George to "view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter" while at the county jail.

Berry was also sentenced to 120 days in jail in nearby Barton County for a firearms probation violation.

My main complaint about Stuff on Screens is you still can't be 100% sure when you take your ipad or phone into the lavatory, you won't have a freak hand spaz and flip your small, sleek, heavy, and aerodynamic device right into the bowl.

Dropping a book or newspaper, you still have a chance (thanks to aerodynamic drag and low density) to snag it before it goes "Ploosh!"

My personal experience is not vast, but I've dropped 2 phones into the quagmire, and 0 books/papers/magazines.

Also, there's something to be said for being able to stretch out and put up your feet and read the paper, as opposed to sitting at your desk (or slumping in your chair, at your desk) and clicking through or scrolling through a longread. Something beneficial to the circulation and the back. The same goes for sketching for graphics - you can curl up in a chair with a pad or sketchbook or you can go outside and sit on the grass. You can't do this on your phone, it's too small; and screens that are big enough for it, require tablets and desks and chairs and sitting in one position.
Placeholder for something witty that doesn't make me sound like an asshole

Not to argue the wider point, but I thought there were a few tablets suitable for sketch'n'curl out there, such as the nvidia shield?

Yeah, but they're still in the minority (and still pretty expensive, surprisingly, given the ubiquity of touchscreens).

Oh my god, it gets worse/better/whatever:

The comments on everything - the tweets, the article - are all nuts.
