Bogus, batshit, banal, bizarre, or bicubic: Assorted News
Re: Bogus, batshit, banal, bizarre, or bicubic: Assorted News
I've been playing the FF1 pixel remaster those past couple days and let's just say, boy, what timing.

Geez, they sure did a nice job on the water there, both deep & shallow.

I bet they figured no one was so attached to the any of the original's fairly cruddy water tiles that there'd be any complaints about them being so completely overhauled. Might be the same reason all the spells have been given 100% of the juice.

Debris is 'landing frame and rear cover from sub', expert says - so instant death during structural failure, rather than a week slowly freezing and/or suffocating while allegedly listening to My Heart Will Go On on loop.

Should be noted that that little bit was from a poster that habitually fakes screenshots.

Much as this is self-inflicted and ironic, hearing confirmation that they're (presumed) dead makes it a lot harder for me to keep making jokes about it.
Sounds like at least it was quick -- maybe even instantaneous, with no time to even register something had gone wrong. I guess that's really the best-case scenario, given that rescue sure wasn't looking likely.

Usually the Randian view that regulations are put in place to punish wealthy capitalists just results in worker death so it's rare to see that worldview result in the rich guy's death

At some point during the past 7 years, my empathy towards people like these who are wholly responsible for their own horrible circumstances (and significantly responsible for/beneficiaries of the larger horrible situation of the world) just kind of turned off.
They were warned so hard that there are laws against taking passengers out in a submarine craft of that vehicle's shoddy specifications. The laws were put in place specifically to prevent the situation that happened. They knew about the laws and ignored them. The only part of the resulting situation that upsets me is that any effort was made by governmental agencies to save them from their own willful recklessness.

How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

This is actually one thing I don't mind. The laws of mutual obligation & assistance at sea are critical things in a vast, trackless, hostile environment.
Yeah, some rich dorks who figured they were invincible got themselves into trouble this time because The Rules Don't Apply To ME, and it's annoying and expensive, but I'd really hate for someone to use that as an excuse to press for a withdrawal of centuries of moral and legal obligations to mutual international assistance.

Who needs an excuse?

I'm not sure if this is the spot for vaccine bullshit, but I'll live and learn.
Anyway: Cool People with Great Judgement are Questioning Pet Vaccines, Including Rabies. Some people express concern that vaccines may give dogs autism, a claim backed up by no scientific evidence.
I'm going to scream until my head falls off.

Nebraska man pulled over while driving car with giant Watusi bull named Howdy Doody riding shotgun
Look, I know it's not safe, but apart from the calling the cops part, this is the kind of news story I can get behind.
(apparently the pair are a common attraction at the State Fair, etc.)
The license plate is killing me

And the car is visibly leaning on its bald right tires until one falls off, sending man and bull careening into oncoming traffic.
"This just in - 2700 pounds of ground round blocking traffic along I-84, troopers are on the scene opening a condiment line..."
Placeholder for something witty that doesn't make me sound like an asshole

CBC reporter investigating the claims of dog DNA testing firms sends his own DNA instead of a dog's. And yes Virginia, now he knows his pedigree.
Simultaneously never going to live this down while also never wanting to.
Also that article title is at least AA+ tier.

Sharing mostly because the chase scene happens in my neighborhood. They don't go past my house, but at one point are a block away. Too bad I didn't go for a walk that day?
