But there's an "oh by the way" reveal that Bill Gates was friends with Epstein.
Epstein’s apparent role in directing outside contributions was also elided. In October, 2014, the Media Lab received a two-million-dollar donation from Bill Gates; Ito wrote in an internal e-mail, “This is a $2M gift from Bill Gates directed by Jeffrey Epstein.” Cohen replied, “For gift recording purposes, we will not be mentioning Jeffrey’s name as the impetus for this gift.” A mandatory record of the gift filed within the university stated only that “Gates is making this gift at the recommendation of a friend of his who wishes to remain anonymous.”
U.S. to leave global postal union next month barring last-minute action; global postal rates could potentially rise by as much as 300% in response
I suppose it was always predictable that RMS would one day end his distinguished career by saying something deeply, deeply stupid. But Jesus fuck, of all the hills to die on.
Writing a long-winded blog post where he enumerates all the perceived "misunderstandings and mischaracterizations" would be in character. I could even see him writing up a blog post dissecting the semantics of rape, pedophilia, ephebophilia, etc.
I don't expect him to talk about it in interviews. He's pretty famous for keeping his interviews on message and setting preconditions (like "you have to call the operating system GNU/Linux") before he'll agree to one.
I don't know if he's still on any mailing lists where he'd consider speaking off the cuff like that (he's definitely not on Facebook or Twitter, and probably has dumb nicknames for them that he thinks are cute). But as for live events, if he still gets invited to any? I think he's a very easy man to goad. If there's a Q&A and somebody asks him about it, I don't see him having the self-control to say "I'm not here to talk about that."
I wasn't aware of those allegations until now, but I'm not surprised by them; he's always been one of those "social conventions are stupid and I don't have to follow them; if you're offended, that's your problem, not mine" guys. Took awhile, but I guess it's his problem now.
to this latest debacle. Dude's foul. Shoulda gotten the boot years ago.
Shitty men are never worth the cost, and are never as irreplaceable as they think.
