A friend of mine was actually curious as to how bad this is (in terms of basically forcing Uber drivers into indentured servitude), this is the actual email exchange of him talking to a Clearbanc rep:

Image

Understand that the instant pay system accrues interest at a rate which is clearly predatory ($2/workday... the estimate is that you will pay $1250 for your $1000 advance) and that if you do not repay it within the rather short allotted time, $50 penalties apply and will continue to be applied (hence my friend's question)

NOPE. NOTHING WRONG HERE.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccckkkk Uber.

Sounds a lot like the Delivery Fee that pizza places were eventually sued into reminding customers is Not A Tip, except even more insidious.

Harry Shearer is suing Vivendi/Universal for nonpayment of Spinal Tap royalties.

He claims that between 1989 and 2006, total income from soundtrack music sales for the four creators of the film was reported by Vivendi as just $98. (Yes, ninety-eight dollars.)

In addition, he claims that Vivendi ‘asserts that the four creators’ share of total worldwide merchandising income between 1984 and 2006 was $81’.

The complaint reveals: “Shearer is concurrently filing notices of copyright termination for publishing and recording rights in Spinal Tap songs he co-wrote and co-recorded, as well as in the film itself”.

The action seeks US$125,000,000 in compensatory and punitive damages.

This was the Shkreli thread right?

Apparently he was bragging on livestream after his securities fraud trial that he "beat the government 5-3" on the charges.

xD xD xD

Rule of Law has been so abused today that anything he actually gets charged for feels like an absolute cretin beating up another absolute cretin. American news is now just the tedious bits of a Shakespeare play.

Globe: Shkreli jailed after posting a $5000 bounty on Facebook for a strand of Hillary's hair

How many times can a man say "you can't make this up!" in a year?

Who doesn't love modern-day slave camps?

RevealNews: They thought they were going to rehab. They ended up in chicken plants

Never mind not being paid, how about:
Men who were injured while at CAAIR rarely receive long-term help for their injuries. That’s because the program requires all men to sign a form stating that they are clients, not employees, and therefore have no right to workers’ comp. Reveal found that when men got hurt, CAAIR filed workers’ comp claims and kept the payouts. Injured men and their families never saw a dime.

I mean, prisons were already modern-day slave camps down to being explicitly listed as an exemption from the 13th Amendment. This is just companies realizing that people were beginning to catch on and they needed to transition to exploiting the next stage of slavery being "banned".

Of course. In fact you could probably very easily make the case that slavery has never actually been abolished in the United States.

But it also says something that some of these slaves were like "fuck this shit, send me to prison". American Prison.

Here’s how the alleged scam worked. JPMorgan moved to forgive the mortgages of tens of thousands of homeowners; the feds, in turn, credited these canceled loans against the penalties due under the 2012 and 2013 settlements. But here’s the rub: In many instances, JPMorgan was forgiving loans on properties it no longer owned.

More on this: Gov. Snyder lied under oath:
ABC wrote:Hollins testified that he told Snyder in July 2015 and August 2015 that there were concerns about increased lead levels in Flint's water.

During congressional testimony in March 2016, Snyder testified that he didn't even learn about the dangerous levels of lead in Flint's water system until October 2015.
