She has also been saying, throughout that entire time, "I will not run as an independent candidate, I will run as a Democrat or not at all". And Chait's argument is that she'll be running "as a second Democratic candidate" - essentially, that if she pitches herself as "the Democrat too good for the other Democrats", then she's not going against anything she said, because she hasn't specifically said she will run only in the Democratic primary, just that she'll only run as a Democrat.

It's a semantic absurdity.

Fair enough.

And Chait's argument is

You're the one who brought up Chait.

I need to start a poster or something for folks in my family who are thinking of voting for him. Like, just pull it out when it's clear someone has his vote just because of name recognition and momentum.

Are we sure Jeff Bidet isn't just Jeb in a rubber mask?

Jeff Bidet reportedly tells audience "I may be Irish but I'm not stupid"

You know, I've always been partial to "I was born at night, but not last night," but I think this is better.

I can't find a single source that will put that in context, which leads me to believe that I'm expected to get angry before even figuring out what he was actually trying to say. Come on, I may be Irish, but I'm not stupid.

isn't getting angry before figuring out what to say Jeff Bidet's whole platform?

The article doesn't expand on that even slightly for foreigners. Is it because selecting him is assumed to be electoral suicide?

It's because Bernie Sanders is rather farther left than most of the well-moneyed Neoliberal Democrats, who would rather allow business as usual to continue, because it's easier to play the ineffectual bureaucrat than have to do work to improve things (cf. Jeff Bidet).

The race as always is between rich people who wouldn't toss you a rope if you were drowning in quicksand and rich people who would take the rope and make sure nobody else tosses it to you until you can explain to them why you have a right to use the rope. Obviously neither one is your friend, but for practical purposes you want the former rich people to be in control of the rope in hopes that they won't get in the way of somebody else tossing it to you.

Bernie is a rich person who wouldn't toss you a rope *personally*, oh no, but would demand that the other rich people toss you a rope and try to hold them accountable when they fail to do so. It is unclear what he would do if somebody else stepped in to try and throw the rope, and that is worrying.

Bernie sounds like the best option hands down, in that metaphor

538: What Makes Our New 2020 Democratic Primary Polling Averages Different

As a pundit, Nate Silver is dogshit, but as far as analyzing and explaining numbers, he continues to be one of the best.

The new tracker looks interesting and, at a glance, more informative than RCP's. Though ultimately, they wind up saying the same thing: it looks like Biden has SC in the bag, but the other early states are too close to call.

It's not gonna matter, because the moment one of these guys gets the official runner badge, the newspapers are gonna just SLAM it

just make up the worst possible lies

and the public is gonna eat it all like so many triscuits

it's happened two times already and nobody has a plan on how to avoid it the third time around
