Yikes, had I been in your shoes I would have interpreted it the same way. That video is totes wrong, the lady makes the tricky sound too short to identify properly.

Chicken Doria + Shrimp Doria + Gratin is a solid combo.

Also, the 3DS version seems to be rebalanced, because many of my food items are priced differently than yours.

Another Blackshroom lets me fill in my other truffle recipe.

Image

Image
That's actually... I mean, my first guess was Black Pepper, but yeah, that's about how I'd make a pasta in Bechemel. (I'm not sure why I'd do pasta in plain Bechemel, but there you have it.)

Image

*tries Pork*
"No?"
*tries Ground Pork*
"Oh god dammit. Is there some weird ass legendary pig out there I have to butcher for its magic assmeat, or did they just mistranslate the recipe?"

They mistranslated the recipe.

Image

Image
My assumptions about the pizza recipes were correct. Could have done this weeks ago if it wasn't for the weird-ass inclusion of green peppers on the regular sort of pizza.

Image
I had no idea what Doria is. I Googled it. Doria is a rice casserole. Suddenly the missing ingredient seemed obvious.

Alfine just had a test over at the not-Hogwart's, and she aced it. Head of the class. Good for her! Time to celebrate with all the parfaits and jelloys I know how to make.

Charge Lance, but stronger.

Curaga.

Image
The Thief Rats around Otts Lake carry Ruby Wands, which sell for a decent price. Not a great price -- I'm better off trying to steal Medium Mana Potions from the Undines or Salmon hunks from the Trolls -- and Otts is a bit too dangerous to be spending a bunch of turns on trying to steal what's basically just $300.

Smoke Wood erry day

Everyone's Satiety is at 99. I realized I was getting overstocked on some stuff -- eggs, pork, cabbages -- and cooked off as much Pork Okonomi as I could to get rid of them. Everyone is stuffed full of savory pancakes, then fed cabbage juice until they can eat more pancakes. Pork Okonomi is kind of shit for EXP, though, so I don't think anyone actually leveled up from the exercise.

You know what that means.

Image
New cutscene. A guy from Cassel Garden is cooking for some bigwig, and needs a Misto Plant. Nobody actually knows where they are, though, but Siela's got a growing reputation for going out and getting her own stuff.

Image
Apparently not, since your sous had to come here and beg me for it.

Image
Point is, a new area is unlocked. Not that I'm going there yet.

Heh heh.

Blond boy is pretty salty about getting shown up by Alfine during the last test (despite him being a grade level above her, so that's gotta sting). He joins up as a second mage, because apparently going out and applying magic to the faces of monsters gives vital insights into the theories needed to pass tests.

Image
So new area, and new party member. While Alfine is good at holy, earth, and fire magic, Elias has dark, wind, and ice spells. Given that two of the still-locked areas on the world map are a desert and a place called "Fire Island", I suspect that cold-elemental magic will be very useful before too long.

Image
Sure except for all the monsters out there who can hit us with spells. You'll see. You'll see, very soon.

I kind of wonder a couple things. First, have you tried just, like, "a fish" + knife? Maybe that's how you get Roe.

The other ... jellies are like jello here, not like jams. Is it possible the description "It is jelloy" is trying to say "It is jello-ey"?

Okay, Elias is not going to find out how dangerous things are outside anytime soon, because he joins at level 10. Everyone else is pushing 20.

Image
Misto Plant is a dumb name so from here on out I'm calling it the FISTO PLANT.

Image
Mt. Gilbert is sort of a wind-themed dungeon. The new eagles here love to cast it, and Sylph spirits join the ranks of Dryads and Undines here.

Image
There are also honest-to-God Garuda here. You can guess what that means.

Image
Yeah, finally.

Image
Meat Baits are barrels of rotting flesh, but Fragrance is a jar of something pleasant. It drives away monster encounters. It's Herb + Water + Jar + Pot, so I could have been making these as early as the first dungeon if I knew how.

Image
And then... it doesn't!

Image
Since I didn't know about the wind dungeon theme quite yet, I was getting my ass kicked from the monsters here. It was so bad I had to use a Magic Rope to leave.

I'll spare you the screenshots. Garuda Eggs are to Eggs as Otts Water is to Water. In addition to being a requisite part of Chicken Risotto, Garuda Eggs can replace regular eggs in recipes that feature said regular eggs. So there's Smoked Garuda Egg, Scrambled Garuda Egg (choice of Salt or Butter), Ham & Garuda Egg, Bacon & Garuda Egg, Garuda Omelet, and Garbonara.

Image
There is no Garuda Omelet with Cheese, however.

Image

Image
Tea Leaves grow wild on the slopes of Mt. Gilbert. It's a shame proper tea water is only found somewhere else.

Image
Th... thanks...

Image
"Great, maybe we can sneak past the bird while it's asleep."

Image
Yeah, right. The Wind Slayer starts the fight with two Garuda flanking it, but Sword Dance, Ice Lance, and Volcano took care of them pretty quick. After that, the fight was... pretty boring! Everyone had an egg salad sandwich before they left, boosting their wind resistance. Fred, often the favorite target for spells thanks to his low-ish magic defense, is wearing the Wind Ring for even more resistance. So while its physical attacks hit hard and it occasionally tries to Silence the party, most of its spells bounce off us without doing much damage. Alfine can keep up with healing pretty well, since her spells don't do much damage.

Honestly, Siela's and Fred's attacks didn't do much damage either, leading the fight to drag on kind of a lot. I can easily afford medium health and mana potions with the income from the store, so getting KOed was never really a worry. Siela hit with Overkill, Fred just stabbed the thing since he doesn't have a really good single-target damage spike, and Alfine kept on healing and buffing attack.

Image
The boss was guarding a nice new broadsword in addition to the Misto Plant.

Once we return to the store, the Cassel Sous is waiting to pick up his delivery. He gives us a little something in return...

Image
A very little something.

Image
Gustav, as expected, shows up to be an asshole.

Image
Wow, that's a lot of EXP and money. No telling when I'll get another Misto Plant, though, and there are three ingredient blanks to waste the Plant guessing how to fill. Yay?

Image

Image
I spend the next day in Ostenlein restocking my supply of Smoke Wood, so nothing interesting happens.

As it is, I think I'll go back to Otts Lake for a while to grind up sales for the next bar rank. Otts Water, Salmon, and Tuna are generally more valuable than Garuda Eggs, now that the novelty of having those has worn thin. Truffles remain the critical ingredient in my most valuable recipes, and those are rare drops around the Lake. Sidequest done, there's not much reason to go back to Mt. Gilbert.

I'm skipping the recipe list this time. The only changes are the additions of the Garuda recipes listed and the :mystery: Misto Soup.

Escape could be useful, but by the time we're in bad enough shape that we need the extra shot at fleeing, the fragile thief is probably already KOed. Wide Shot was learned shortly before I realized Lidia also knows Sword Dance and swapped out her bow for another longsword. Oh well.

Image
Sometimes the number of blanks in a recipe is the biggest hint. Rice, Vinegar, and Nori are all critical ingredients to Maki, leaving only one space left. Might as well plug in a whole salmon and see what happens.

(Only in a video game would a person cut out the egg sac from a salmon, make a single sushi roll, and then throw away the rest of the fish.)

Image

Image
There's a troupe of street performers!

Image
One of them is one of Lidia's old friends.

Image
But she doesn't have a portrait, so I assume she's not going to join the party.

Anyway, she's impressed at Siela's ownership of her own restaurant, and wants a Garuda omelet.

Image
Obliging her gets you a Luck Book, one of those items that pops up in RPGs sometimes to permanently increase your core stats. I've been giving them to Siela under the assumption she'll always be in the party.

Much of my cost/profit analysis of these recipes is done under the assumption that I can buy whatever base ingredients I need and make my own stuff. But the restaurant is so profitable and makes so many things that I can afford to buy up Fred's entire stock of, for instance, Salt. The shops in Ostenlien and Lar are actually becoming necessary to get the ingredients I need, and I've started buying things like Pasta and Bread that are cheaper to make myself, just to keep the ingredients handy for making other things.

Anyway, while I'm in Lar, I hear a rumor about the clouds up north. They're magical! Maybe.

Image
Having Scallops in the inventory again opens up precisely one new hint recipe.

Image
Character development! Alter's a monster hunter. That's how he makes money. How this is different from Siela hunting monsters and cooking their parts to sell for cash is not described.

We've advanced enough that contests now prompt for three dishes rather than just two. Winning remains a non-issue; just cook a few recipes that sell for over $1000 and bring 'em in. But we just only hit the salesof quota to hit rank 7, so we need to keep on cookin' to get rank 8.

Image
The reward is ten potions that sell for $300 a pop, rather than Melons or Black Pepper that's bought for $150.

Image
Go home, Alter, you're drunk.

Image
(He did give us a new recipe in his intoxicated rant.)

Image

Image
Despite getting a new Bar Rank, no new areas or quests have opened yet. So we're still grinding out ingredients and EP at Otts Lake, giving me very little to report on.

Image
Work here? I own it!

Image
Oh. Guess I should have bowed. You'd think people would know this sort of thing; royalty tends to advertise.

We went to Gilbert Pass for Garuda Eggs. There was a Misto Plant there. We took it. End of day.

Image
Don't you think maybe you should? Without the added dimension of recipe experimentation, this is a pretty lackluster JRPG. A new quest or set of ingredients would be nice.

Image
...what's this?

Image
Probably here the whole time, but only now am I pressing into every nook and corner for anything I might have missed.

Image
Moguani studies puzzles. No more is said on the subject.

Image
If you bring him a pizza, he pays $800 for it. As far as I can tell, this can be a daily ritual. Get up, decide which dungeon to crawl today, make three of whatever recipe gives a stat boost to whatever that dungeon demands, bake a pizza, throw it down the well, head to the school to see if Alfine or Elias have anything to say, head out to the dungeon...

Image
Discovery: Misto Plants do not regrow day-to-day. (The dungeon food for Gilbert Pass is Smoked Egg, which are cheap and grant +25 Wind Resist.)

Image
Oh.

Yeah sure great lemme at it you got a boat or something?

Image
He charges $5000 to open the next dungeon. But that's easily affordable at this point in the game.

Image

Image
The fishermen can't leave port because of the monster, so the shop is largely unstocked. Which is a shame, I often make most of my money after a day at Lar by selling tuna dishes, and he's all out.

Image

Image
Oh yeah, I looked this up. I'm not about to throw away an ingredient I can only get every six days in a dungeon crawl by trying to guess what else goes in the stupid soup.
