Flour probably. Lard? Milk?

You're probably on to something. I keep thinking of lard as an ingredient -- I'd put it in the pie crust -- but it's probably just a frying medium to this game.

Apparently a slightly enhanced port of this cave out for the 3DS eShop in February. In English! I had no idea.

I think it's a different translation though. Which, while clearer, probably isn't as amusing.

It is less jelloy

This is a big update, because I had to wait for some work on my car to get done and I forgot to bring my library book. Had the tablet, though!

Image

Image

Image
Ah, back to my roots. Batter and deep-fry everything in sight! It's like I'm back in the American south.

Image
Even with an equipment upgrade and a few extra experience levels, the constant ambushing in the cave dungeon is a nightmare. Alfine learning weapon skills she can't adequately employ is not gonna help.

Image
It's an old birthday card from Siela's parents. This doesn't seem to have any effect on anything except making Siela swear to redouble her efforts.

Image
Another sold-out day, although I don't have much left at this point. Apparently Salted Plum and Beer aren't actually a combo.

Image
Described as increasing found items. I think it slightly increases the number of things spread out across the ground on the dungeon floor.

Image

Image
Siela and Alfine both learn the next level of HP recovery.

Image
More important than finding a new recipe is finding a new kind of recipe, because chances are good I'll be able to work out a couple others with the insights.

Image
And having done that... yeah. To hell with trying to experiment out the for-sale recipes, I do enough guesswork as it is. Over the next couple of days I buy out the recipe stocks at Fred's, Lar, and Ostenlien. Doing that adds a lot of new stuff, but it opens so many hint recipes it may well raise more questions than it answers.

Image
For example, American's don't tend to use butter as a sandwich spread, but it's standard on nearly all the sandwich recipes. I wouldn't have guessed that.

Image
Furthermore, all pizzas come with green peppers on them.

Image

Image
There's plenty of hint recipes to work out.

Image
Sushi: does not combo with itself.

Image
Another ingredient stepping-stone. Lard is kind of expensive to make, given that Jars are $50 a pop.

Image
There's not as much Maki as there is Sushi or Sashimi, but it finally gives me something to do with all this Crab meat I picked up in the cave and reef areas.

Image
You can fry fish!

Image
You can fry potatoes!

Image
You can... continue to discover that sushi doesn't combo with itself!

Image

Image
...I reiterate: who the hell butters a tuna salad sandwich?

Image
That's... a really good sale price for the investment in ingredients.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
Whew.

Image
This is why the game's reliance on guesswork is so frustrating. "Ha ha, that's dumb, you can't combo a BBQ potato and a potato omelet just because they have a foreign place in their names. That's ridiculous." And yet here we are.

Image

Image

Image
I mess around with Alter and Lidia for a little while (in Brusso Fields, since I was running out of some of the basic ingredients). Alter has a skill called Drink that increases his amount of Drunkenness by 1, to a maximum I assume exists but haven't reached. Being drunk unlocks some skills he can't use sober, like Drunken Walk, a teetering gait that improves his Evasion. Maybe the self-buffs have a greater effect the drunker he gets?

Drunkenness appears to reset after each battle, making Alter pretty normal in random encounters but probably a good boss-killer in those lengthy fights where he has time to set up.

Image

Image

Image

Image
Hitting level 5 Rank prompts another conversation. The restaurant needs a specialty, like... I dunno, freshwater fish! So let's all go to Otts Lake. It's up the Otts River from the Otts Cave, you can't miss it.

Image
Oh, nice. I just put them on the menu because I'd worked out the recipes, but it turns out people love eating all sorts of different kinds of fried rice in one sitting.

Image
Wow! Look at those sales!

Image

Image
Aw nuts, I forgot to take Alter and Lidia out of the party for the run into the new dungeon.

Image
As usual, there's lots of new loot to be found. And since these two don't have much development yet, they're learning new skills rapidly, like how to not get hurt too bad.

Image
Pretty much any recipe that calls for Water can have it replaced with the water from Otts Lake to double or triple the sale price.

Image
I'd just call it Ott-au-feu, but that's me.

Image
W... wait a minute.

If a recipe calls for water...

You can replace it with Otts Water...

Image
For the last two weeks Siela has been trying like mad to work out the subtle flavor her teas and coffees were missing, and as it turns out what she needed was the pure, clear spring water from a place she'd never been to or heard of.

That...

That's just great.

Image
The plant monsters in Otts Lake are fond of using Bind to paralyze party members, costing them several turns in combat. Everyone takes a brisk drink of Bourbon to steel their nerves before heading out.

Image
It... doesn't work.

Image
Aw crap I bet these guys are super tough, also hey neat I bet they drop Tung.

Image
Trolls. They hit even harder than the boars and bulls do, and hitting hard is all bulls, boars, and trolls can do. The Undines like to buff evasion and cast Blizzard spells to hit the whole party for cold damage. There are rats who paralyze on a hit and sometimes steal money, but I actually welcome running into those -- they drop heal potions of various sorts instead of ingredients. It's the plants that are the most dangerous, since they can paralyze, as mentioned before, and can cast Land Spear for almost triple-digit damage.

Image
Alfine can do it too, though I'm not sure what enemies are weak to Earth damage.

Image
A new class of recipe. Now I know what the game expects out of the various types of Meniere!

(Say "men-yer", accent on the second syllable.)

Image
Yep. The lake is up on the plateau, feeding the waterfall rather than being fed by it.

Image
Near the end of the dungeon is this tiny peninsula where... nothing happens. :mystery:

Oh well, it took a ton of healing and mana potions, but I made it through Otts Lake! Whew!

Image
Revisiting Alfine occasionally nets us a new hint recipe or something, but today we meet one of her senior classmen. I'm glad the given title is "Blond Boy" because I wouldn't have been all too sure otherwise.

Image

Image

Image
Everyone trades in their Bourbon for Tea before the next trip to the lake. Cold Resistance to avoid Blizzard damage may well prove more important than an ineffective buff to the ability to dodge paralyzing attacks.

Anyway, we find a stone tablet here. There's another one in the forest. Presumably I'll find a way to get past them later.

Image
That sounds promising! But the one time I tried to use it, it missed.

Image
Siela has Swords Dance, allowing her to hit all enemies with one attack. Fred has Charge Lance for hitting foes in a column, useful for KOing Undines that are hiding behind Trolls or Mad Plants. So it's kind of weird that Alfine, as the mage, had to wait this long to get an area-effect spell; Volcano hits a row of up to three monsters for fire damage.

Image
Lidia gives you the hint for this recipe: _____, _____, _____, Honey, Bowl. Only 720 combinations to try, assuming all three items are fruit! Conveniently they were, for certain 1-in-720 values of "conveniently".

Image
I would not consider the Balsamic to be the part of a caprese you can ignore.

Image
Oh right, Okonomiyaki almost always has Cabbage in it. Once I remembered this, the Squid and Pork Okonomi recipes fell into place.

Image

Image
The description says "Everybody's favorite" but people are starting to get sick of my Crab Croquettes.

Image
Nobody bought one.

Image
I completely forgot to look and see what these do.

Image
The Boar Leaders around the Lake rare-drop the Blackshroom, "aka truffle", the last mushroom in the game as far as I can tell from the Secret Catalog. So I whip up my most expensive Truffles dish...

Image
One that can take a character over halfway to their next level, or sell for over $2k.

Image
I didn't even need it to win the cooking contest! Although my salesof on the internet remain inadequate to get another Bar Level.

Image
Croquettes also do not combo with themselves.

Image
It's been a month! Checking in with the Secret Catalog, I've found 82.7% of the recipes in the game, working with 69% of the ingredients available. But having only recently discovered how they work, I only have 5.1% of the Combos. There are many more monsters to find, too: I've only seen 27% of them. Recipe book follows, as usual.

Well, now I know what to look for, but it's a rare drop, so don't hold your breath on this stuff.

I bet you guessed Yellow Spice and Beef. Ha ha! Wrong.

Miso Soup 1 is Miso, Tofu, Sealeaf, Sea Broth, and a Pot. Miso Soup 2 has Clams in it; Miso Soup 3 has Onion in it. It's a matter of figuring out where the new stuff goes; it's not in place of the Sealeaf or the Tofu.

Huh, it's strange that you've been taught that. I mean, that's almost you pronounce Ménière's Disease for sure but that's not a cooking term. "Meunière" is more like... Hmm. I always struggle to describe the "eu" sound. It's sort of like the u sound in "hurt" but without the h or r. Not exactly, but close enough. "Meunière" comes from "meunier", for "miller", on account of the recipes calling for flour.

(And this has been your "François is being an insufferable know-it-all again" moment for the day!)
