The first pass of the sword has revealed some interesting stats:
1. All three of the "Gaia" trilogy survived. (SoulBlazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma)
2. All of the Write-Ins lost, with the single exception of Sunset Riders.
3. JRPGs remaining: 8 (FF2, FF3, EB, SoM, CT, SMRPG, Harvest Moon, Breath of Fire)
4. Western RPGs remaining: 1 (Shadowrun)
5. Adventure/RPGs remaining: 5 (LttP, SoM, Gaia Trilogy)
6. Shooters Remaining: 2 (Star Fox, Sunset Riders)
All in all, the poll seems to be mostly dominated by platformers and JRPGs, which isn't a surprise considering what system we're talking about.
I'll be continuing to do matches of 4 with 2 votes for this round, starting with the 1v1s in the ro16.

It occurs to me that "Super" is almost like "The" in SNES titles. An empty word, artificially inflating the "S" and "T" sections, respectively.

I love EVO and SMRPG, but Yoshis Island is pure brilliance and even though I think it's probably a technically worse game than Mario it was way more personally affecting.

Seriously. Yoshi's Island is the best game on the system by a mile. I thought it was going to be the one to face off against Super Metroid in the final.

All in all, the poll seems to be mostly dominated by platformers and JRPGs, which isn't a surprise considering what system we're talking about.
Sidebar: even though the SNES might have been the stronger system a Genesis tourney would be interesting for exactly this reason.

Holy fuck, those titles. What a brutal round.
Gave it to EVO for how refreshingly different and interesting it was, even if the evolution system was mostly linear.
Gave it to SoM because, it's still one of the best co-op multiplayer experiences I can think of to date, even with the ring menu pausing.

So, look guys... I know EVO had a kind of janky difficulty curve, some obtuse mechanics, and some bonkers hidden stages and bonus bosses, and is generally imperfect in reaching for its mad ambition...
But SMRPG has Mallow.
Mallow.
I don't think there's enough awesome haiku on the planet to forgive that.

Yoshi's Island and EVO get my vote.
Super Mario RPG is legitimately incredible, and has a very fun battle system, but it went on to be improved upon by Paper Mario and perfected by Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga. The graphics have aged poorly, and the weird non-canonical additions to the Mario world remain weird and non-canonical. Secret of Mana should rightly take this over EVO in any just world, but this isn't a just world. My nostalgia for how strange and offbeat EVO was when I found it beats out my nostalgia for the good times Mana gave me by a hair. Yoshi's Island is a masterpiece of game design and has absolutely gorgeous visuals.
