This one's not too hard for me. I've never played Colony Wars, so cannot speak to its merits. Tales of Destiny comes from a time before the Tales series was run whole-heartedly into the ground and had one of the most interesting combat systems of its day, but it still never really managed to grab me no matter how many times I borrowed it from my friend. Parasite Eve 2 is a very interesting but extremely flawed mash-up of Resident Evil and the first game that never quite gels for either style.

Parasite Eve 1 on the other hand is one of my favorites on the system, despite being difficult to go back to these days thanks to the plodding movement pace. The battle system has nothing quite like it outside of Vagrant Story, the challenge dungeon in new game + is super interesting and encourages breaking the modding system for weapons and armor, and the then-modern setting still gives it a really unique place in Square's output. Not for nothing, it also vastly improved on its source material while being equally as silly. Chrono Cross gets a pass here. I love it more than most people, but I'm not sure it's going to hang against stiffer competition. I still find the battle system pretty interestingly balanced even if the character bloat is awful. Ape Escape, as I vouched for in the write-ins, isn't exactly Super Mario 64 caliber when it comes to 3D platforming but it does a lot of similar tricks when it comes to setting the baseline for how a controller can be used. The dual shock gimmicks were pretty cleverly integrated throughout the game, and monkeys in siren hats will never not be charming.

Never liked Ape Escape.

Never played Colony Wars.

Tales of Phantasia is the only Tales game that matters.

I couldn't play Parasite Eve when it came out (despite hearing all great things and enjoying more recent attempted playthroughs) because my dad was convinced Aya was Lara Croft and would destroy my innocence, so I don't consider it from my PS1 experience.

Chrono Cross, on the other hand, we can all agree is the peak of rpg gameplay and storytelling experiences.

You guys should give Colony Wars a shot. It's like a proto-FreeSpace with branching storylines and some fun database stuff about the Galactic Empire.

The government used to let the farmers of the agriworld keep .001% of their harvest, but this was discontinued after they all got too fat to work.

Colony Wars was super rad.

Three games I've only barely touched versus three games I've played at least a decent chunk of makes this a round of ignorance-dictates-votes. Sorry, Breath of Fire 3 and Vandal Hearts. Not so sorry Legend of Dragoon. There's a REASON I barely touched you. FFT, FF8, and Puzzle Fighter 2 get my votes by de fault.

I wonder how many good games (speaking of Vandal Hearts, not LoD or Bof3) FF8 is going to knockout simply by being a game that people have played.

Yeah, Vandal Hearts seems like a champ, I just have no personal attachment to it. The Playstation was one of the most wildly successful consoles ever, with one of the most wildly diverse sets of games released for it. By the very nature of the console's releases there are going to be a lot of games that slipped through people's fingers. The PSX also didn't have the wide-spread emulation fervor that the NES or SNES or Genesis had, so a lot of those smaller great games never got their later due through people trawling the archives.

I voted for both. I have a soft spot in my heart for FFVIII because it's actually kind of fun if you run through it with Enc-none from the beginning-ish.

Threads of Fate is the type of action RPG that made the PSX my favorite system. I don't know if it was during my game renting days or just a game I only played at other people's houses but even as I remember it fondly now I didn't even recognize it until I saw the cover art.

Lunar, somewhat similarly, I never played but am voting for because I know if I had ever bothered to I'd be voting for it for the same reasons.
