Still not a fan of Tony Hawk or the many games that followed in its footsteps. Misadventures of Tron Bonne is a lock here. Twisted Metal 2 and Ape Escape is a tough call, but I think Ape Escape is the game that is probably easier to go back and play nowadays as well as being more of a mark for 3D platformers in general. I like a good car combat game, but I've tried occasionally to poke back at the Twisted Metal games on PSX and they just don't hold up outside of their era all that well.

I played the everliving fuck out of Tony Hawk during my fanciful high school emo skater dweeb years.

Throwing a vote for that and Twisted Metal, which I bonded with my cousins over. Neither are better games than Tron, but well, there is no way Tron has not already won.

I voted for Vagrant Story even though I've never enjoyed playing it because if an RPG with clunky, obtuse mechanics, terrible menus, good music and setting isn't an excellent example of the PSX era I don't know what is.

I was not into shmups at the time, but I've been told that einhander is one of the two best of the era and also very weird in a good way.

Wild Arms is packed full of weird charm, ripping off everything it possibly can under the sun. Suikoden 2 is really, really, really amazing.

But not as amazing as Einhander or Mega Man Legends. Einhander is a special, special snowflake not unlike Bushido Blade, while Mega Man Legends is probably the best studio Ghibli video game ever made.

I'm not going to begrudge anyone their votes in this round, because holy shit all four of these games are top-tier, but the fact that Wild Arms is currently in last place is making me die a little, you know, on the inside, where I keep the organs I harvest.

I think my favorite moment in the original Wild ARMs is just before the final battle with Alhazad. All along, Cecilia's been the typical dutiful and tender-hearted young magician princess, who fights because she must protect her people but does not enjoy doing so in the least, etc. etc. And when she comes face to face with this erudite and almost debonair demon scientist doing horrible human experiments, she basically goes "I've never fought with hatred in my heart, but you, you I fucking hate, and I'll roast you alive with a smile on my face." That really stuck with me.
