All memes aside, I freakin' love Mountain Lions/Cougars/Pumas. They are just so glorious looking. And they can meow and purr!

Every time I see one it always crosses my mind that "This is the largest cat in the "HOUSECATS" half of the tree rather than being anywhere on the "BIG CATS" side of the tree... ... ...
...
...
...
maaaaaayyyyyyyyyybeeeeeeee you coul...
...
...hm."
I mean in general they do belong, as they're opportunistic ambush predators/scavvs just like lil guys and can eat a lot of different shit and basically find a way to get by in almost any environment with any competitions, the way housecats and a lot of (but not all) the smaller cats do as well. Which is also cool.
(also a lot of big cats purr too - but they can't meow!)
Re: The unbearable cuteness of D'AWWWWWW
I thought meowing was a thing cats developed specifically to interact with humans. Is our past full of unrecorded housecougars?

Posted as a response to pumas, but the Smothers Brothers are also pretty cute.

As (semi-) social animals, small cats meow as part of their general non-aggressive communication.
As we've discovered, they do tailor their meowing to mimic their humans, yes, and are a lot more verbal as domesticated animals because there's that much more asking to do (especially if they have humans who talk to them a lot), but meowing itself is not something they picked up purely as a result of domestication.

Oh, they pick up our accents? That's even better.

I think it's more our cadence and style of speaking. Though accents might figure in there!
