Godzilla is pretty great. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's as good as a modern Godzilla movie can reasonably be expected to be. It's not as good as Pacific Rim, but Pacific Rim is like the platonic ideal of what a kaiju movie should be; you can't compete with that.
The Godzilla scenes are excellent and there are enough of them. The non-Godzilla scenes are decent and, while I really didn't care about any of the human characters except Bryan Cranston, they at least weren't actively annoying. Again, that's pretty much the best you can ask of a Godzilla movie.
And kudos to the trailer for not giving away the entire movie. I was surprised by
the presence of Mothra -- Mothras, plural! -- and Cranston's death in the first act.
Now, if you want to check out a really damn great take on Godzilla, I suggest the comic Godzilla: The Half-Century War, by James Stokoe; it examines the entire history of Godzilla through the eyes of a soldier who's been fighting him since the beginning, and the art is gorgeous. I recommend that you support your
local comic shop or independent bookseller, but if you want to get it on Amazon here's an
affiliate link that'll give me a small kickback.
