Noise We Enjoys
Re: Noise We Enjoys
Been listening to this album again. Really, really solid.
Re: Noise We Enjoys
Guy I knew through a friend of a friend back in my college town committed suicide earlier this week. I hadn't been close with him, and hadn't seen him in almost a decade, so it's not really affecting me much, it's just strange to think he's gone.
One of his bands had the amazing name of Jean Claude Jam Band. Still holds up:
His other stuff is just as good:

Great singing but man that trumpet work is really bothering me.

Which trumpet? The saxophone or the trombone?

Hey Geo (and maybe others?) The Avalanches finally have a second album out after all these years:
Haven't gotten to the rest yet but they're legit doing the calypso angle hard on this track. I was immediately put in mind of Stone Cold Dead In the Marketplace.

I think this is a crystal castles remix with parts made to sound like they are being played on an ALICE which is an old French microcomputer (contemporary of stuff like the ZX Spectrum, C64, Sinclair, TRS-80, etc). I love how romantic the branding of that thing was.

Getting a serious Moebius vibe from that illustration.

Huh, really? I thought it looked like a close imitator but not quite him. The style is dead on, but the underlying anatomy work is somewhat below his usual standard. But I guess that could just be a case of "This is an advert, je m'en fous."
Re: Noise We Enjoys
Since I was grousing over in the other thread about how the new Rocky Horror is too faithful a recreation of the original, here are some examples of different versions of the songs.
My favorite version of Sweet Transvestite, from the Roxy '74 cast:
The Mexico '86 cast takes that arrangement as a jumping-off point but cuts it down to just guitars and drums -- and has an altogether more gruff-voiced Frank than Curry's version:
The Broadway '01 version did a few interesting recombinations of songs. Here's Once In Awhile with The Charles Atlas Song worked in as countermelody:
And at the end, Magenta and Riff's last lines of dialogue erupt into song:
(Having a Magenta who can actually sing is a contrast to the movie in and of itself. That's Daphne Rubin-Vega, who theatre nerds of a certain age will recognize as the original Mimi from Rent.)
I could have sworn it combined Touch-A Touch Me with Hot Patootie, too, but I'm not hearing it on the Youtube video I found, so that must have been a different cast.
...okay, one more: here's Science Fiction/Double Feature performed by Joan Jett:
