Oh right, I was just thinking, "Wait, he did one that wasn't about coffee today; what was it again?" Thanks for reminding me.

(I see the Jump the Shark moment as that time Clango got his memory erased.)

And it's certainly not that I don't like coffee. I fucking love coffee. It's just, the strip's reached a point where it's more predictable than 1990's Peanuts.

It kinda reminds me of Dilbert. In that Dilbert found its niche and huge success when it became entirely a workplace comedy, but it was actually a lot funnier before that, when it was frequently about other shit.

Though really you could make the same case for any comic strip that became stale and repetitive. Like, Garfield was pretty good when it was about Jon and Lyman being socially inept as often as it was about Garfield being grumpy (and the animated version is better than the comic strip, because it has plots instead of just gags).

That sounds about right. Since then it's been in that weird limbo where I don't really enjoy it anymore but it hasn't done anything terrible enough for me to eject it immediately with extreme prejudice. Like Cat and Girl and... hmm... huh. Just those two, then.

Well, yes and no. It's been 25 years since the end of Bloom County (actually, almost 26). But Bloom County was immediately followed by Outland, which ran from 1989 through 1995, and then Opus ran from 2003 to 2008.

But yeah this is the first time we've seen those guys in a new black-and-white four-panel strip since 1989.

Kinda makes me wish the comic was terrible so I could stop giving a crap about it. It's brutal timing too, given the recent events coming to a head. Or inside a head, as the case may be.

It just struck me how much creative control Balder has over the arrangement. The artists must feel like what the Oatmeal termed "voice-operated drawing tools".

Need more comics about vigilante justice in your life? Try Metal Hands McGee, the only webcomic about a superhero with metal hands that go "Catamo!" whenever she hits people. Current arc deals with some ugly jewelry and the mob boss who's obsessed with them.
