Gravity Falls

Postby Zach » Sun Feb 09, 2014 11:10 pm

It's still a few months until new episodes are out, but Alex Hirsch has us covered.

1. There's a coloring contest going on right now. It's over sometime tonight. I think I've got this one in the bag.

2. The Mystery of Gravity Falls is airing official Mabel's Guide to Life shorts. They're good stuff.

3. Unlicensed merchandise is alive and well.

Ah man, I have bug fuck all to contribute to this conversation right now, but late last year I was thinking about running a Gravity Falls-themed minicomp around the same time the new season started. Who knows when that'll be, though.

A while back I posted a great podcast interview on youtube with Alex Hirsch in-character as Grunkle Stan (with the hosts' permission). Naturally, it's the most popular video on my channel by leagues:

One of the commenters pointed out that a writer on Gravity Falls is actually Matt Chaps, one of the Brothers Chaps from Strongbad fame.

I am delighted.

Oh my god you guys.

Oh my god.

I forgot how stupidly this show makes me laugh. And then on top of that it not only uses the Mars Attacks! method of invasion-stopping in episode one, but in the second episode Mark Hamill plays The Thing. This show is amazing.

These first two were so, so good.

Zombie Soos completely destroyed me. Amazing.

Shapeshifter was honestly more than a little terrifying. Surprised Disney let's Hirsch get away with all this awesome shit.

Anybody got links to where I can get them? Preferably non-torrent links?
(EDIT: Got one; thanks.)

Both were available on demand for free on my cable box. Not sure if there's a legal site up.

You and your fancy cable box. Everything should always be on Hulu forever

Is Gravity Falls completely flawless?

No, probably not.

But on the other hand, the miner hole.

You know what this show's really good at?

Chekov's gun.

Finding some completely ridiculous, seemingly inconsequential detail (or, usually, several) that becomes important in the climax.

Here's a video of all the sock opera bits from the latest episode. (Warning, spoilers!)
Aaand I really loved this bit, too:

Overall it was pretty great! Not a big fan of how they dealt with the laptop, but I'm sure we'll get answers on that front soon.

Yeah, I think they built it up way too much for it really to be dismissed that quickly. It'll be back.

Fan speculation has it that Old Man McGucket is the author -- and wouldn't you know it, his name is 8 letters.

I've got mixed feelings on that idea -- really I'd prefer that he just be exactly what he seems. But that's how I feel about Stan, too, and the ship's long since sailed on that one.

I think I read a rumor once where McGucket and the goat switched bodies once. Maybe the guy we know as McGucket is really the goat inhabiting his body? Or maybe the goat wrote the journals in McGucket's body then switched back. Makes you think.

God. The sock puppet episode was great.

I love how genuinely disturbing Bill can be. He's so not human it's terrifying.

Apparently Emmy C is storyboarding for this show now. I did not know that!

I still can't believe Disney let them show Stan gay-marrying the automaton-thingy in the latest ep. Granted, that was a credits gag, but still.

I can't believe that Disney let it slip that GIFfany's dad was an octopus.
