Most laying hens have never met a rooster. There's no way that egg is a child of any sort.

It's a shed unfertilized ovum. The eggs we eat are chicken periods.

Yeah, it always kind of gets me when people freak out eating eggs on ethical grounds based on "eating chicks" or such. I mean, maybe you don't support factory farming or keeping chickens, or consuming animal products of ANY kind, or whatever else - and that's fine - but grocery store eggs are not Balut.

I did wonder, when I learned of the delicacy that is Balut, at what point in an egg's development does it stop being vegetarian? It's basically the abortion debate applied to dietary preference.

Seems like that basically depends on where your opinion of "when does an embryo become a human?" already lies.

If you'd somehow learned to expect logical consistency from human beings, perhaps. My partner has chimed in on this, declaring that What we do in the Shadows cuts to the heart of the matter - when you bite into a sandwich, it's nice to know that nothing has fucked it first.

The question seems pretty academic. If you're eating a scrambled egg it was never fertilized, and if you're eating Balut you're waiting until that is unmistakably a developed embryo before you boil it.

The author of Kill Six Billion Demons was once asked about the nature of immortallity in-universe. He said it's a relative thing; a human is practically immortal compared to a mouse, but can hardly be said to even exist from a cosmic perspective.
