Net-juu no Susume, or Recovery of an MMO Junkie, is pretty fun and cute so far.

I've seen this described as Cormac McCarthy's The Road except with moeblobs.

Seems like a Mad Lib.

From what I've seen, the only parallel with The Road is the nuclear winter part. Supposedly it stays sufficiently light-hearted, which is a feat in itself.

Patito and I am watching this and we're pretty much in agreement that this is just a prequel to Blame and we're waiting for Killy to show up.

Bluh, pass. I can't stand that kind of thing these days. It just feels like misery porn, just watching a continuous stream of terrible things happe-

Okay, never mind what I said two seconds ago.

It's very soft.

It's so bizarre because there's a seed of something that could eventually make the show turn grim, but so far it feels more like YKK and its more about chill travelling through the post-apocalypse.

My favorite post-apocalyptic anime is Non Non Biyori, because it's not a fictional apocalypse, and that's horrifying.

Wait what?

Are you talking about the youth depopulation of the Japanese countryside or...?

Yeah, I feel bad for Renge, who has no friends her own age. At all. Because she's the only 7 year old in 100 miles.

Still can't decide if my manga talk is more appropriate here or a comics thread.

Devilman OG is not what I expected. I wouldn't call it a horror manga in the way I've come to know them, and certainly not a thriller. It's a bit slow and even during some of the 'stronger' moments has an air of silliness that it's self-aware of throughout almost the entire story (totes anime). The ending makes it all worthwhile though, and at only five volumes it's a good investment to appreciate a classic tragedy.

Yumi's Cells is fun, and only occasionally reminds you that it's the story of the mind of a women written by a man.

Think Death Note detective work and reasoning, but as a YA-ish romantic comedy series.

I've started watching Danganronpa 3 and .. damn the structure of this show is weird. Mostly in that it's two separate series and it's recommended you just alternate back and forth between them every episode. Despair is a prequel series and Future is a sequel series in relation to the plot of the games. Despair is (so far) just this bizarre comedic over the top school-life series starring the cast of Danganronpa 2 and a maid-teacher who exemplifies Mongrel's gif above, and while I'm sure it's going to end up fairly twisted so far it's leaning super hard into the already quirky DR2 cast's quirks.

Meanwhile, Future is drawn and lit incredibly darkly in comparison to the point of it just being a visually uninteresting mud, and is rehashing the Monokuma game mystery in a way that so far is weirdly more complicated but lower stakes than the prior versions. (Monokuma hangs a lampshade on the repetition of the theme at least). And yeah, there's a fakeout death that seems at this point to have only existed to create more fanservice.

I'm only five or six episodes in between the two of them, it just seems like a weird separation of themes that DR has always done best with blending together instead. But I'm in the paint for the weird, dumb lore of this series and it's nice to actually sorta see Hope's Peak in operation in the Despair series, and I'm curious at the ending Future is ostenstibly leading toward. Not sure if Ultra Despair Girls will play into it at any point or not, or if Danganronpa V3 is genuinely unrelated to this plot or not, but I'll probably end up playing that sometime this year to find out.

I feel so bad for you. Nowadays whenever a friend who's into Danganronpa says they want to watch 3, I immediately try to talk them out of it and tell them it's totally unnecessary to enjoying the series. It is just total nonsense and fails to be entertaining or satisfying on so many levels.

For various reasons I've watched it three fucking times now, subbed and dubbed, so I guess I'll try to jot down a few of my thoughts with as few spoilers as possible. And that way I can just link this to people next time this show comes up.

Also, disclaimer: Don't let anything about 3 colour your impressions of V3. V3 is actually pretty fuckin' great.

---

The Future Arc is insanely plodding with tons of mindless posturing and Anime Fights that don't drive the story and don't contribute anything, it simultaneously manages to be confusing while also saying nothing. And dropping class trials, in favour of having people meander around hallways of all things, is just terrible. Just absolutely no good.

And yeah, there's a fakeout death that seems at this point to have only existed to create more fanservice.

And THIS SHIT, yes. There are so many stupid little fakeouts and scenes that seem like they're going somewhere only to fail to do anything more than tease. Worse still, you haven't even seen the dumbest iteration of these fakeouts yet.

... I honestly have nothing else to say about Future Arc because it's either total blandness or spoilers. The whole thing feels like a kid smashing his action figures together.

---

The Despair Arc is a little better, but also far worse in some ways! Even setting aside minor quibbles like how most of the Class 77 kids spend most of the series just standing in the background doing nothing (everyone aside from Nagito, Chiaki and Hajime might as well not be there) it still has some of the most astonishingly stupid plot holes I've ever seen in a show. And I'm usually good at missing those, so they'd have to be really obvious for me to pick up on them. We're talking like slapping-your-forehead-while-screaming-at-your-screen-level plot holes.

It also skips over what could have been two of its best fight scenes, just so they could have more totally pointless clashes between characters I completely do not care about in the Future Arc. It's bizarre how much the effort and budget was misproportioned here.

There's pretty much no way to view the events of the Despair Arc positively. The Tragedy works better as a mythological, almost fairy tale-like event, and trying to show how it happened step by step was just way too difficult for the people writing this show. They buckled under the pressure... and if you actually accept what happens in the show as canon then it retroactively cheapens what we're told in 2.

There is literally no reason to watch the Despair Arc when Danganronpa Zero exists. It covers basically the same events without unnecessary fantastical plot devices, and it's concise, fun, well-written and has great new characters like Ryoko and Matsuda. I can even hook you up with a copy if you want.

I also made a chart about this exact topic a while ago! It illustrates some of the show's problems pretty clearly:

Image

In conclusion, the worst thing is that the whole story is just utterly pointless: anyone who's played Danganronpa 2 can confirm the story has a bittersweet ending that's quite effective in its own way. But there's nothing we "need" in this. It's not like in MGS4 where they were basically forced to tie up all the loose ends and ending up making something 'not so great' just because of all the baggage... this show just creates loose ends so it can tie them up again! I like giving the example of it being like if after Dawn of the Dead ends they had a sequel where they landed the helicopter somewhere and it was just two hours of them building a house and talking about how they're safe from zombies now. It's enough to know they escaped into a fucked-up world, we really don't need more than that.

Positives are:

The character designs are nice.
I will say I am surprised, and a little happy, that the anime didn't ruin Nagito. That seems like it would have been very easy to do but his character remains intact and he even gets to do some cool stuff.
The scenes that both arcs build towards for the climaxes are genuinely pretty good... but the sacrifices taken to actually get there are just horrifying.
Juzo is the SHSL Baller.

(Sorry for coming back to the forums just to autism about Danganronpa 3 but holy shit I hate this show)

((goddamn I meant to just type a little and I ended up going way overboard))

i could actually save you a lot of words with the simplest, most succinct version of how badly they fucked things up with the future arc in particular:

the blood is red.

like i don't think i actually need to say anything else about the future arc of dangonronpa 3. that right there shows you how much of a shit they clearly gave.

I liked the Despair arc much better, but agree with everything you said; Zero's a way better version of basically the same thing, and every time it focuses on the new characters for the Future Arc WHO THE FUCK CAREEEEEES. About the only thing good in the Future arc is the brief stopover in Despair Girls land, and even that's just because more Monica is more good times. Junko remains A-Tier Waifu material, Nagito was great and was responsibly for the ONLY episode revolving around the Futures that I actually liked, it was good times to see more of Mukuro, and if you want to hear more from the 77s then YOU GET TO HEAR EACH OF THEM LITERALLY SAY A SINGLE LINE IN EVERY FUCKING GROUP SCENE. It's some straight up "Donald, Sora, Goofy!" shit. Everything related to Mitarai, his abilities, and thus his effect on the plot was straight up bullshit trash. My biggest complaint with Despair arc other than Mitarai etc and the Futures is that they tease you for a split second that you're actually going to get to see an entire scene in the untouchably fucking good animation style from the actual games before slamming that door in your face.

If it had been a straight prequel / alternative version of Zero, without Mitarai's stuff involved, and spending the rest of the time actually going more in depth with the 77th class and turning the knife more and more with each passing episode as to what Junko was up to, then the entire climactic part of Despair would've been fucking great. As it was, it just ended up being pretty alright.

meanwhile, in the future, the blood is red.

what the FUCK you guys.

(now just waiting to see which happens first, a DRv3 sale on PSN or a port to Switch)
