I don't know if I'll last that long.

You know what's actually pushed me on the side of keeping going for now is Ami Koshimizu's great voice acting. Which is really sort of a weird thing to pick out as the part you like considering THIS SERIES.

If you don't have an abject love of the utterly ridiculous, then... yeah. Maybe Kill la Kill isn't for you.

I do love the ridiculous. I just can't shake the feeling that this is a ridiculous... porno.

Which is maybe something I can watch and be amused anyway! Maybe? If it's funny enough?

They made the first few eps really trashy for some reason, I guess to scare off people who would get upset about the rest of the series being full of naked people. After the whole POWER OF SHAMELESSNESS fight they stop acting like it's supposed to be titillating.

The show's kind of unfortunate at first, but it gets slightly better about it and if you watch it that long you stop caring about it. It's gurren lagaan on speed with clothes instead of robots. The only thing that got me through the early parts is that fact that Mako is great.

Okay, I got to 7 for now. Carrying on on the strength of 4, but I think I'm forming an opinion best described as

Bebop is wagyu
FLCL is all you can eat sushi
Kill la Kill appears to be a bag of really cheap chips deep fried mystery items

but maybe sometimes you eat a bunch of cheap chips deep fried mystery items.

And feel really sick afterwards and regret it.

Klk is the type of anime that only a real freak can enjoy.

Like, what I mean by that is, it is literally the opposite of what you'd want to show an anime virgin in order to get them to understand anime. Showing them hentai would be more productive toward that end.

Klk is great and I love it to fucking death, but like most of Gainax's shit (yes I know klk isn't technically gainax fuck you) you have to already be an anime fan (real freak) to get it. Otherwise it's just a bunch of weird colors moving around on a screen that makes you vaguely uncomfortable.

Anyway, Panty and Stocking (GAINAX) had a worse first couple of episodes as far as that goes. The first episode is literally about them fighting a giant shit monster.

That is 100% the truth. This reminds me of NextWave a bit - a "deconstructionist" (I actually hate that term) gag reel. Which is not going to be the least funny (or even watchable) if you're not familiar with the material. As opposed to the Weird Al parody dictum that the song needs to be funny even to people who have never heard of the subject. I don't watch half so much anime as I used to, and I'll miss the subtler stuff like all the Utena parallels, but yeah, I get it. I just still feel like it's junk food. That said, I am not mister-too-good-for-junk-food.

Funny you mentioned Panty and Stocking (well okay, not really, because P&S set the pattern on a ton of stuff that KlK is doing) I actually gave up on P&S somewhere around... episode 5? 6? I forget. It wasn't a deliberate thing, I just told myself "Yeah, I'll get to that..." for a couple weeks and then realized, I guess I didn't want to bother. I probably would have done the same for KlK if it wasn't for episode 4. When I said it needs to be funnier than it is uncomfortable, Episode 4 was basically what I was looking for there. That was great! 5-7 were alright, with the most notable bit out of those actually being the series' first decent non-comedy moment (where Senketsu tries to sacrifice himself in the bathroom, awww).

Which also reminds me... is Mako literally eating shit when she busts in while cleaning the bathroom? That went by reeeaaally quick of course, but uhhhh....

Mako lives a fast paced no worry life she could have been doing anything she wanted to be doing.

Having rewatched that sequence, I do not understand the part of it that is even suggestive of eating poop. What were you referring to?

Twice (it's the same bit of animation, repeated) she releases a huge yellow-brown dollop of something into her mouth.

Well thank god for that.

I guess that's a reference to something but I can't imagine what.

Well maybe it's just that and only that? But then I don't know why she's just eating a raw egg in the bathroom. Maybe it's one of those bodybuilder "I need to get strong for this hard work!" sort of things, like instead of tying on a hachimaki, she's eating a raw egg?

When Mako was a no-star, she ate four dozen eggs every morning to help her get large.

Watched up to #12. Too much Big Fight and exposition, not enough funny - felts like the series was getting perilously close to taking itself a little too seriously. But there were some fun moments, mostly thanks to Mako (well du-uh).

I guess that means there was enough funny after all. Just.

For some reason, it amused me infinitely that they actually used Suppé.

Up to #23, one more to go.

Will comment later, but for now I just want to know if I should watch #25 before #24 or after?
