I saw the previews for the movie and it looked, I shit you not, like a YA movie but aimed at nerds. You know, like the Hunger games, if every ten seconds someone said BAZINGA! and then made a reference to the 80s.

Given how much I hate nerd pandering and YA novels/movies, I think this may end up being my least favorite thing of all fucking time.

This is probably an improvement over the actual story, which is basically what you described, only that The Hunger Games part is an MMO where the hero ("hero") plays perfect runs of 80's video games and movie RPs while IRL sitting in his Oklahoma trailer home.

Oh, and the Architect (for lack of a better analogue) is basically Peter Molyneux.

Specifically the Peter Molyneux that exists inside Peter Molyneux's head.

I don't know how the story develops because I checked out about the time the protagonist challenges Acererak the demilich from the Dungeons & Dragons(tm) module Tomb of Horrors(R) published in 1978 to a game of Joust. Not jousting, William's Electronics arcade machine Joust(tm), the hit arcade game published in 1982.

Was that before or after the protagonist visits the Temple of Syrinx, from 2112 (Rush's 1976 concept album about a dystopian future where human lives are controlled by computers), where he finds a Gibson Les Paul guitar and plays the chords to "Discovery" to find a secret level?

I did a fist pump when she name-dropped The Wuzzles and the Gummi Bears. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's more stuff mentioned in this video that I actually watched or played than there is in the actual Ready Player One.

I do think there's a pretty clear shift toward porn parodies that explicitly target Nerd Culture(TM). Chris Sims reviewed Batman XXX (link does not show any explicit images but does say "Batman XXX: A Porn Parody" at the top, so probably NSFW) when it came out in 2010, and noted just how much loving detail Axel Braun put into recreating sets and costumes to make it look authentic. (The guy playing the Joker even grew a mustache just so he could cover it up with makeup.) People have joked that porn parodies have more authentic adaptations of superhero costumes than Hollywood blockbusters do -- but is it really a joke if it's true?

There were a few Tomb Raider-themed porn shoots back in the '90s, but now there are entire porn sites devoted to women cosplaying as comic book/game/anime/whatever characters. Hell, not only are there Witcher porn parodies, there was at least one officially-licensed Playboy pictorial of Triss when Witcher 2 came out (CG models, not cosplay).

Course, the difference between the 1990s and now is that I'm over 18, and that's part of it; there's more porn targeting my interests because I can legally buy porn now. (And that is of course before we get into how the Internet has changed everything, porn perhaps most noticeably of all. Ha ha, "buy porn." Like anyone does that.) But it's not like Batman '66 is a product of my childhood. There's more geek-focused porn now because there's more geek-focused everything.
