It is mildly entertaining to watch Disney spending billions of dollars on these nostalgia licenses in the moment of Wile E. Coyote hang time just before they disappear into the relevance abyss. Or hilarious if you happen to be George Lucas.

I mean, Solo did make its budget back plus $117 million. That's the definition of "failure" we're talking about here.

Whether or not cynical members of Generation X are impressed by a one-minute trailer for the new Star Wars children's cartoon is perhaps not the best indicator of whether it will be a financial success for its corporate owner, either.

And don't forget that the real money is in merchandise. Disney bought Star Wars for $4 billion. I can't find exact numbers for merchandise sales, but Forbes reported in December 2015 that projected merchandise sales for 2015 were $3 billion, and for 2016 they were $5 billion.

Kids aren't going to wake up tomorrow and decide they don't like Star Wars anymore and don't want to buy any more toys or T-shirts or bedsheets or Halloween costumes.

And even if they did, Disney has already made back its investment several times over.

I'm still amazed it was sold for so little.

Well, I dunno if George Lucas cared enough to sell it for more.

The guy doesn't have to work another day in his life.

George Lucas I feel has an interesting relationship with this series. I actually, as I think about it, realize I don't know what exactly his level of control over episodes V and VI were, but the rest were:

Episode 4: "We love your idea! Now this person is going to tone down your script, this one will be in control of the cinematography and this one will decide all the editing"

Episodes 1-3: "Lucas we love your movies and want to give you as much control as you want" *makes episodes 1-3*

Disney Buyout: "I'm happy to give you my scripts and consult on where I th-" "nope, thanks ours now, leave."

I imagine being removed from the actual process is about as much as he could hope for, whether he actively realizes it or not. Plenty more time to review salads.

You know, it's probably the dozens of hours of BotW talking, but I actually like the visual style.

I get why people are skeptical, but y'know, Filoni's done right so far. I'm still optimistic.

And if it gives us an explanation for just what exactly the First Order and the Resistance are besides "they're exactly the Empire and the Rebels but we changed their names", that's just gravy.

Plus, like I said earlier, I figure we're bound to see some of our old friends from Clone Wars and Rebels before this is all over. The Rebels finale felt like it as much as told us "Yeah, you'll be seeing these guys again."

Jon Favreau’s live-action Star Wars show will be called The Mandalorian - Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Taika Waititi will also direct episodes of the series

I like the sound of that.

Though I think it means we probably won't be getting that Mangold Boba Fett movie after all.

So just doubling down on all the stuff I don't like, I guess. Okay then.

(But I guess as long as we're resigning ourselves to making this nothing more than nostalgia porn, at least we're getting Lando out of it.)

It's telling that I see "The Saga Comes to an End" and mostly feel relief.

Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to.

This could be promising. Looks like Tomb Raider-style gameplay?

But...eh. EA. They've promised no microtransactions or loot boxes, so that's a start, but...it's still EA.

Is this just fantasy?

Welp, I enjoyed pretty much every single frame of the first episode of The Mandalorian.

It's beautifully shot, it's got a staggeringly good cast, and I think it's fair to say that Favreau has a good handle on what makes Star Wars appealing. And there's not a Skywalker or a lightsabre in sight.

It's a little hokey, because of course it is; it's Star Wars. This is a show where the main character is introduced cutting a dude in half in a doorway, but later it turns out he donates the money from his bounties to help orphans. This is what passes for moral complexity in the Star Wars universe, and it's basically "a BioWare game where sometimes you choose the blue option and sometimes you choose the red one," and I love it.

It plays up the western stuff, and the samurai stuff, and the '40s serial stuff, and look, I don't really know much about the old EU except I played the KotOR games, but this feels like KotOR in that it understands the Star Wars universe has room to tell more stories than the Skywalker Saga.

Also it made me realize that I would play the fuck out of an RDR-style open-world game set in the Star Wars universe.

I mean you sold me on that game a long time ago. It just didn't exist anymore.

Rare Jedi? Who had to hide they were Jedi because literally every other player in the game was hunting you the fuck down and if you died as a Jedi your character was deleted? Holy shit S tier design

Back in '06 I worked in a room full of Star Wars geeks who, after work, used to go home and play Galaxies together.

In hindsight I suppose I should have given it a shot.

Never been much for MMOs, though. Still haven't gotten around to setting up CoH even though the Circle of Jerks is back together.

So guess who just learned there's an active, maintained, and even recently updated fanmade revival of Star Wars Galaxies?

I'll have to check it out. Apparently the modern version is an attempt to cherry-pick out the best parts of the game's major iterations (pre-Combat Upgrade, Combat Upgrade, and, ugh, "New Game Enhancement") and here's to hoping they manage to actually do that. NGE in particular was a very concerted effort to scrub out all the things that made Galaxies unique and turn it into another WoW clone with laser swords, and that's the state the game capsized in, so hopefully they haven't retained too much of that albatross.
