Cartoons aimed at girls

I feel like there's a lot to say about the Sailor Moon re-boot-make-envisioning. But maybe there aren't enough posters here to say enough about it that I think it can sustain its own thread.

But, you know, mulling about the new Little Pony and otherwise tittering about the virtues and sins of media that we "don't get" is something I think everyone loves to do and doesn't seem like it's going to slow down.

Viz is putting the new show and the old show up on Hulu, so you can watch it with legal sanction.

But was anyone here a fan of the first show nearer to it's initial US release?

Watching this reminds me of Nintendo releasing the Famicom GB Micro in the states. I have a weird sort of cross-cultural osmosis nostalgia for the foreign version of the thing I love. The first episode of the new Sailormoon was kind of super charming precisely because it feels so stale and old-fashioned in its plotting and comedy, which means it hits all the right notes to FEEL just like the original show, give or take a ludicrously awful CGI transformation sequence. It's kind of nostalgia-tingly by the time Usagi is catchphrasing at her best friend's demon mom, but it simultaneously feels off to have the whole thing be in Japanese.

also mamoru is insanely dracular this time around

also also ms. bump head are you fucking kidding me

I don't really remember much about Sailor Moon except

Sailor Jupiter>Sailor Mercury>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sailor Moon=Sailor Venus>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sailor Mars

I am prepared to fight about this.

Watched a ton of Sailor Moon as a kid int the 90's when it was in syndication. It's fine; I don't think it holds up, but it's a cute show and aesthetically I love it.

Haven't watched the reboot yet, but the new one looks a little... I dunno, clean? Not expressive? Uncanny valley? Can't really put my finger on it.

Did Sailor Moon always have actual super whining powers?

Yup, that was a thing that showed up once in the original anime, and a couple of times in the manga. The prevailing theory is that it's an automatic defense mechanism for Royal Moon Family children who haven't fully learned to use their powers yet.

I was directly in the target demographic when it was first released. Yes.

Haven't seen the reboot yet because Brontokon, but yeah, the super whining powers were always there. They get dropped after awhile.

I have very fond memories of Sailor Moon, by virtue of my brother and I both being sort of locked up at home when it first aired with nothing to do but watch TV. Fun cartoons ended at 9, obviously, but Sailor Moon came on at noon. And lemme tellya - in a sea of daytime drivel, that was an island in the storm. Sailor Moon and Ranma were our ANIMES~ gateway drug. Nostalgia glasses being what they are, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't enjoy it if I were to re-watch it now, but we still have those pleasant memories.

The thing was that in the original cartoon Usagi was just the only character who actually acted as if she really was an eighth grader. Well, okay, maybe a little younger, but you get the idea.

Pretty sure Sailor Moon was on early Saturday mornings after King Arthur and the Knights of Justice but before Dragonball.

The only thing I remember being on at noon was Samurai Pizza Cats.

I was talking weekdays on YTV. I'm more than a half-decade older than you, so I doubt we were on the same TV schedule.

Samurai Pizza cats though... <3 <3 <3

Also how are y'all talking about super whining but not the meatball sense that alerts her when her friends are in danger

Usagi's voice actress combined with the transformation sequence music made me think I was watching Suite Precure.

I trust you're all aware that Marvel is replacing Thor with a girl-Thor with the specific intent of drawing in more female fans, correct?

Can anyone tell me why this will have the opposite effect? I'll give you a brobdingnagian, beefy hint why.
