Look, I don't even know what channel 45 is since it's not UPN anymore and I'm not about to learn.

also the season finale just aired for Clone High and I stand by what I said thus far, but the back half is way stronger than the opening few episodes. episode nine in particular deserves some kind of award.

Episode 9 was my favorite the first time, too.

Forgot to mention this earlier, but Nimona trailer. Movie was released on June 23rd... anyone actually see it?

I heard good things from multiple places, but lost patience with it 20 minutes in.

Probably didn't help that I see it as part of Netflix's union busting strategy

Fair point, that. But curious if it'll be worth watching later without that particular antagonism.

Went back and read the comic. Mainly hoping Ballister isn't as inept as he seems in the trailer? Considering he's the actual protagonist and all.

The animation thread I follow elsewhere seems really high on it, but we haven't sat down and watched it yet; it's near the top of our queue. Consensus seems to be very different than the comic in a lot of ways but solid in its own right.

Noelle Stevenson herself seems to think it was quite well done, so I guess that's a positive note.

Huh, I typically saw ND on older articles, so I thought he was being misgendered the other way around. Well, good to know.

Yeah, I was aware he'd come out as NB but didn't know he was using masculine pronouns. Good to know; thanks for the heads-up.

The Venture Bros movie was just about everything I hoped it would be. If we don't get any more, this answered enough of my questions that I'll be satisfied. I hope they get to make more, though.

I sat on the couch for several minutes afterward just Feeling A Way.

Go Team Venture.

Futurama's back again and, much like the last two times, it starts off a little creaky and relies too much on the kind of topical jokes that have never been the show's strength. (If you liked the Nigerian scammer jokes in Bender's Big Score, you'll love the binge-watching jokes in...whatever this episode was called. I've already forgotten and I'm not going to look it up.)

On the plus side there are still a couple good laughs in there, and given that the last two revivals turned out all right once they got their sea legs under them, there's hope for this new run yet.

And apparently whatever deal DiMaggio negotiated to return included top billing. Good for him.

Yeah, he didn't get the pay increases he was going for but at least they gave him respect for trying I guess.

Also this episode was pretty middling, but a lot of Futurama is pretty middling, and even middling Futurama is perfectly watchable. The woke stand-up joke was even really good, which should frankly be the bar for any dinosaur series getting sucked out of amber these days.

Well, that's part of the deal; negotiations aren't just about pay, and talent always has the option of accepting some other form of compensation. A pay increase is usually the first thing they ask for, but a more prominent credit is usually the second.

And hey, here's one for the Unforgivable Sins of UI Design thread: this episode fills the screen with freeze-frame gags which you can't fucking read because Hulu obscures 2/3 of the viewing area if you pause. Pirates, as usual, get a superior viewing experience.

I thought Miyazaki had retired, but there's a new movie of his premiering soon internationally (already released in Japan), "The Boy and the Heron". Apparently the Japanese release deliberately had very little publicity, as Miyazaki felt going in nearly blind would make for a better viewing experience.

Anyway, that's neat!

I saw a headline on some site or other call it "Miyazaki's last film" the other day and I thought "this is some Stones' Last Tour shit at this point" but nonetheless I'm sure it's great.

I don't even think this is even his first time to retire then make another film anyway. Have heard great things about it from people who have been able to see it
