Animotion and Car Tunes
Re: Animotion and Car Tunes
So, like...black-and-white screenshots, right? That had to be their reference. Possibly faxed?
Except Box Art Mega Man, obviously.

From Captain N character designer Marcello Vignali:

EDIT: Oh, this bit of history is fun:
EDIT2: Holy fucking shit NO FUCKING WAY WHAT
LONG JOHN BALDRY WHAT?! THIS IS *AMAZING*!
When we were working on the Captain N, the Nintendo corporation gave us a bunch of 8-bit images of their characters. In some other cases they sent us some drawings or packaging art.

EDIT: Oh, this bit of history is fun:
When we were designing Mother Brain, the Nintendo corporation didn’t give us any art for it. Instead, they gave us a video game. Unfortunately, none of us were good enough to get to the Mother Brain level — and the DIC animation studio didn't want to pay us artists to sit around playing a video game. So one of the secretaries brought in her son and he got us to the Mother Brain level. We grabbed some screen shots and were able to complete the design.
EDIT2: Holy fucking shit NO FUCKING WAY WHAT
Lana’s father, King Charles, is technically still alive, though exiled to the Mirror Zone by Mother Brain. He’s voiced by [bluesman and QUILTBAG pioneer] Long John Baldry, who also voiced Dr. Robotnik in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog

I mean yes I am aware that the possible options are screenshots and drawings. (Fun article, though; thanks for the link.)
I'm figuring that, specifically in the example of the Mega Man Robot Masters, it has to be screenshots because those off-model designs are more plausible as interpretations of sprites than character art, and I'm figuring black-and-white because their color schemes are all wrong. (Except Ice Man and Fire Man, who, y'know, have pretty easy color schemes to guess.)
I particularly love Cutsman (sic) with a pair of scissors on his head.

Also I'm pretty sure even my daughter could beat Cut(s)man after fifty tries, what qualifications does Kevin have to get the role of Captain

"Iffy" is about right, though ultimately I think it comes down on the side that people should experience social consequences for saying insensitive shit. Topher Bus refers to his no-longer-namesake being "canceled for being a dirtbag", and Abe just says a string of casually ableist and homophobic stuff that...yeah, most of us probably said without thinking when we were his age, too. But you're not meant to be on Abe's side; it's cringe comedy where he just keeps digging himself deeper.
It could have been executed a little bit more elegantly, but I think the most important thing is that the joke isn't "cancel culture is bad," it's "holy shit, can you believe the messed-up stuff we used to think it was okay to say?"
Re: Animotion and Car Tunes
Yeah; the reboot is eight episodes in now, and I'd say about three of them (the episodes about stress, ArroyoFest, and sex ed) are solid enough to hang with the original run. The rest of them are middling-to-fine; it might be damning it with faint praise, but it falls prey to the usual problem with streaming animation in that it just doesn't feel as tightly paced or edited as prior network stuff does and overall I'm enjoying it a lot. It's just easy to see where going in and just even slashing down the pauses and speeding things up a bit would improve the exact same material. Now that the show's become more comfortable with its new cast in the back half of the season it gives me a lot of hope for season three.
Re: Animotion and Car Tunes
I'm overall enjoying the new Clone High quite a bit. Agree that the three Niku mentioned are the best ones, but honestly, overall, it gets everything right that the O.G. did, modernizes it pretty well, and I like the new characters. Really hope it gets another season.
Re: Animotion and Car Tunes
I've only seen the first one so far. I feel like I should savor it in case it's another twenty years before we get any more.
Re: Animotion and Car Tunes
It's already been renewed for a third season
Been loving it, it matches the original of the energy. Feels like the 20 year gap thing is just a bit they developed, rather than what actually happened

Oh, well, I'm sure HBO Max wouldn't cancel a project that's already been greenlit.

Yeah, I'm not gonna call the Huffington Post "HuffPost", Fox "Twentieth Century", or AOL "Aol" either.
